Does anyone aspire to own an Infiniti?

We all know the usual objects of automotive luxury lust: Ferrari and Porsche, BMW and Benz. Genesis has made some inroads, and is Lincoln back in the game?

But Infiniti?

For years–decades, even–Infinitis seems to be bought on price. Not quite the status of a Lexus but way nicer than a Nissan.

But the brand’s latest offerings, like the 2025 Infiniti QX80 Autograph that we just sampled, doesn’t feel like past Infinitis. Just the center console, for example, is a work of art. Two generous cubbies, each lined in the softest felt and topped with a lid that closes with a satisfying click. Plenty of USB plugs. Neat stitching throughout, too.

A feature that I didn’t enjoy, though? The center screen. Want to make it warmer? Gotta look at the screen. More fan? Warmer butt? Screen, screen. Music? Well, you see where this is going.

More buttons I did not like: for the shifter. Again, even after a week in the car, gotta divert your eyes down.

Road manners, though? Very quiet. Plenty of power. Direct steering. An easy coast-to-coast candidate. Up there with the rest of the luxury class.

The price? How about $115,020 as delivered. Well, we can discuss.

The big question, perhaps: What makes a luxury car today? Is it features, status or both? Infiniti has the appointments, but does the brand have that something special to make it truly desirable to those who desire?

Looks like a Lexus knock-off and not in a good way.

Last Infiniti I thought might be something for me was the G35 coupe.  If they had sold a G35 wagon I would have been *all over that* but this isn't a thing that exists.  I don't know why I would pay money for a new Infiniti at this point because I don't care about their products at all and assume they're all kind of cut-rate Lexus & BMW copies.

I'm kind of a cheap ass though so grain of salt with all of that.

It looks like someone really wanted the Cadillac "I am the Hoover Dam" nose, and someone else wanted the Lexus "Predator mouth" nose, and they both thought they won, but really we all lost.

Nice to see Infinity really leaning into the "historically ugliest SUVs" title they have held since the introduction of the beluga whale looking QX series.

I'm always taken aback when I see a review of a new Infinity model... "Wait... Infinity is still in business?"

I don't know who their target market is, but it's not me.

I have limited interest in large SUV's at this price point, but if I were shopping, I'd be at the Genesis dealer purchasing a GV 80.  That is what a beautiful exterior and interior looks like in that price point and even higher.

Car and Driver has a lot of photos in their review.

Until this thread, it wouldn't have crossed my mind to even look at Infinity.  There's nothing aspirational in their lineup to me.  Maybe they're ok and reliable, but not aspirational.

Infiniti used to make some interesting vehicles, like the old M45, the G35/37/Q60 Coupe, the Q50 Red Sport, and even that M56 with the weird "Japanese Forest Simulator" HVAC. I never aspired to own one, but they seemed to be the "real" Nissan products while the actual Nissan was cranking out Big Altima Energy and ugly weird Maximas that looked like they were designed by Homer Simpson.

I'm honestly surprised they still exist in today's world where Nissan is hemorrhaging funds, but here we are. As ugly as it is, it still can't hold a candle to the old QX56, AKA Peyton Manning in automobile form.

Small addition: I wrote the piece, including the title, before realizing it was a six-figure vehicle.

Six figures?  Just "JFC/SMDH" from me.  Sorry if those abbreviations break a forum norm/rule, but that sums up my general thoughts on how far Nissan/Infinity have fallen and/or how out of touch they are.

Funny, but these seats almost look like they are cloth!  Could have fooled me in this $100K+ price category.  indecision

Looks like they are possibly perforated leather, OK, but what's with the funky color?  The seats are just not, well, appealing to me.  Does Nissan actually use a Western group to determine how to style their cars for North America?  Nissan seems to keep shooting themselves in the foot, while Lexus seems like they can't do anything wrong.   It's sad, because I truly still love the Datsun product, but it all went wrong somewhere along the line.
