How about Solostorm?

We preach the gospel of data collection and analysis pretty often around here. We’ve never lived in an era where data on your laps–whether you’re a pointy-end competitor or simply a casual track driver looking to improve your skills–is easier to collect, log and analyze.
But even the simplest data system is still a dedicated system. It’s another piece of hardware …

Can you also give an example or two of the 10Hz GPS receivers. Through Google the prices were all over the place.
At this point there's no real reason to not get the racebox mini. The cheap 10hz receivers are wildly unreliable and the nicer ones aren't cheap enough to justify them over 25hz and real accelerometers from the racebox. I upgraded this year after limping along the ubiquitous cheap qstarz receiver for years and my only regret is that I held out this long.
Yeah it's easy to make these smartphone-based data logging systems cost almost as much as a standalone data logger that is vastly superior, so there's a pretty small price/feature butterzone where they make sense. I like Autosport Labs' Race Capture systems as a good value-for-money option, all libre software too.

I've also got the racebox mini and it has been decent for me. On track it is pretty fool proof, for autocross my first season the thing was great reliably capturing runs all day. It seems like the app hasn't been updated though and I find trying to setup start finish/lines maybe has a 50% success rate now so I've been a bit disappointed.
The racebox mini can be used with any of these other standalone apps too so if you like one of them and are thinking of getting an external GPS to use I'd recommend it for that over the other options.
I have a set up that's a little more expensive, but I like it so far:
Cheap Boost Mobile Android phone
XGPS
OBDLink MX+
It's perfectly fine with Track Addict as I'm learning the ropes and I've built a good workflow for building records and content to review after each day.

After reading some great responses it seemed that Race capture or the racebox mini were the only entry level options.
The reason was wanting to use data analysis software like Aim's Race Studio. Did some last ditch searching. Found that Track Addict can export .vob files. The vob. can be analyzed in Circuit Tools 2 found free and worked with my Track Addict sample data. So the thought here is that Race capture or the racebox mini are upgrades but if you want to get your feet wet just a few times Track Addict is good.
side note: Aim's Race Studio and VBOX's Circuit Tools 2 being free makes me want their products.

Racebox lets you download the file as a .VBO as well to open with circuit tools, pretty sure harry's laptimer will as well. Like I mentioned the Racebox mini can be used with their own app or any of these other ones so it's a great option if you want to move beyond the 1 Hz gps internal to your phone.
