Pending Sale at this point.

Bought this back a year and a half ago from Powar for a trip to ABQ. (it was perfect for the trip, and turned a max of 24.5 MpG when staying under 65 and drafting a bit, BTW) Anyway, I've put tens of thousands of miles on it since then, and used it to tow/haul/carry and vacation with the whole family.

700R4 trans was iffy then, and it is iffy(er) now. Leaking like crazy.Fluid smells burnt, as it leaked so much it lost all drive. It works when you add fluid, but it truly isn't long for this world. I'd love to give it the NV3500 swap it deserves, but time and funds are pretty short at this point. I'd love to keep it, as it has been very good to me, but I fear it will sit for at least a half year before I get to it. I'll get more photos in the morning.

Extra-Special GRM price? $700

:(

This was a great truck for me as well. Add a trans and cruise for another 27 years.

If this was 4wd I'd have already bought this.

If I didn't have 4.10s in my burb I would be all about this.

I'm going to try to figure out where it is leaking from. It's soaked underneath, and looks like maybe one of the lines let loose. Still drives with trans fluid added, so I may just be able to fix the leak and drive it 'till spring. Price still stands for a GRMer, however.

G dayumm... 24.5 MpG? is that imperial Gallon or something? that seems like a pretty awesome number for that truck. what do you get normally?

I believe it. Dad had a 4x4 with 4.10 gears that got 20mpg all day every day. It wasn't fast, but it would pull.

The 6.2 is a great economical engine if you keep the revs down. A manual trans would get me closer to 26. But again, keep it at 65 and draft whenever you can. That was loaded up with a pair of sofas in the back. Odometer is a hair pessimistic, as well, so it was likely a bit higher than that.

Normally, 18-22 on the highway, depending on how fast I go. (usually 75+)

When I had it, it would get around 16MPG when dragging cars around on my old tow dolly or pulling our camper. I believe the 20+ MPG claim out of someone using basic hypermiling techniques, though I never tried with it. The 6.2 rocks, though its slow as all hell. I learned to be patient, plan my moves, and enjoy the economy and reliability of the old beast. If I hadn't bought a newer turbodiesel Suburban, I'd still be driving this one.

Awesome truck! i am in the middle of converting my 6.5 Burb to mechanical injection, and yes those mpgs are accurate in mine I average about 26. If i wasnt close to being done with the conversion and wanted/needed another truck i would grab this quick. GLWS

Whats the tallest gear on that trans? 1:1? What RPM are you at going 65?

On a 700r4?? 0.696:1

The diesel tach was an uber-rare option, and this GMC didn't come with it, so I really can't help you there.

Ok, so someone do a comparison for me...

I've been lusting over a similar truck in my home town.

It's a '90 model 2500 2WD with tow package, barn doors, a big block 7.4L, and 117,000 miles. It's in excellent shape- zero rust, zero dents, zero leaks, VG rubber, slightly faded white paint. He's asking $2500, and it's been sitting for a while.

So, I am thinking BOTH are very good deals. And I really like the diesels, but the big block one is local.

I'm not trying to thread jack, but I am interested in the hive's opinion, and how these 2 trucks compare.

Thoughts?

The BB Chevy will make you pay at the pump, but will be much quicker than the 6.2. If you are going to use as just an occasional tow pig, and its in as good of shape as you are describing I'd go with the local one. Might get it cheap due to the sitting. There isn't a huge market for BB-powered old 'Burbs.

If you want to use it a lot - the diesel will pay you back quick. The BBC will likely be single digit fuel mileage towing.

I had a 91 Chev C2500HD with 7.4L/4spd manual combo when I was younger.

Since you know the o.d. ratio in the transmission if you know the tire size and rear gears you can calculate the revs at a given speed. I do it all the time when I'm bored at work; "If I put this tire on it with these gears and this trans that would put me at x,xxx revs at xxx mph so I'd need this cam and..." It goes on and on and on and on...

The way I look at it the diesel is the better deal. $700 vs. $2,500 (no haggling for the sake of argument) so there's $1,800 left over. A new trans is $650 or so (DIRT FRIGGIN CHEAP!!!) which leaves $1,150. Pick up a trans cooler for $100 and use the other grand for wheels/tires or towing upgrades.
