Pictures below.

It runs! Really well, actually.

1995 (ODB1) 2 door sport model Golf. This car is pretty much a GTI before there was a GTI, so it has:

2 litre ABA engine

5 speed transmission (worn bushings, kind of sloppy)

4 wheel disk brakes

plaid sport seats,

front and rear anti-sway bars

sunroof.

The car is chalky red. The clearcoat did the famous 90s peel and the car sat for a while in the sun. The paint is not all that great. It will need a respray to look anything approaching shiny.

No appreciable rust- NC car. The car is currently mostly stock.

I put in new control arms with poly bushings (yes, I know the Audi bushings are better), new stock suspension items (springs, mounts, shocks/struts) The replaced components have about 25 miles on them.

I also have some extras for it as well as follows:

spare .20 overbore engine block (work done at T. Hoff in Raleigh, NC) It's never been run, I have documentation.

Wiseco pistons to fit that block

Techtonics Tuning (factory) 268 cam

EPROM tuned for that cam

at least two, possibly three ODB1 heads for ABA engine

Exhaust header (needs to be welded where the wideband fitting cracked)

Everything needed to do a MKIV intake swap (upper manifold, valve cover, etc.)

stock 14" rims with OMG WHAT IS THIS BALD JUNK! tires on them

MkII GTI wheels with mismatched crappy tires but good center caps

I am willing to work one deal for the car plus another for the spares for $201x budgetary purposes.

The car and all of the extras are $1500 for GRM folks.

Price is firm. The car is also going on VWVortex and Craigslist at a higher price.

What is preventing it from running right now? Trust it enough to drive it 20 hours?

The block has just been bored, not reassembled? What brand of header is it?

There is an electrical problem keeping it from running. Once that is sorted (I'm pretty sure I did it myself) I'd trust it to run 20 hours. It only has 125k miles on it.

The block has been bored, but not reassembled. Everything is labeled for reassembly, but I never did get new bearings for it.

Header brand is unknown. It is stainless steel, that's about all I can tell you. I didn't get it new.

This is still at the garage where I sent it.

If you want it, let me know. I suppose I should get pictures of it. Dangit.

did you get the electrical gremlin evicted? Want to sell/ship the block & pistons?

No, it is still at the shop collecting dust. As you can tell I'm not terribly motivated now that it isn't taking up room at my house.

Shipping the block wouldn't be cheap. My guess would be that you could probably get a used block and get it machined cheaper locally. Send me a message if you want me to check into shipping.

This thing is STILL at the same shop and it still doesn't run.

I want to get rid of it. Somebody buy it. I will get pictures as soon as the polar vortex lets me.

I have a tdi engine and a love of all things VW. Do you want a running driving stopping old Toyota turbo project?

Is this one of the fabled reliable Golfs?

It may have been reliable until I tried to remove the alarm system.

The car runs really well now. I got it inspected and insured and put a plate on it. However, I still want it gone. I am just not felling the VW love. My loss, your gain, all that jazz

Recent work done:

Replaced crank angle sensor

Replaced ECU

New tires on 15" rims. From a Ford. I had to stick spacers behind the wheels to get them to work, but I'm not happy with them since they are not hubcentric.

Replaced front brake pads

Replaced both front axles.

Comes with a spare ECU that may or may not be any good.

Price is now $1500. .

Still come with the extra engine etc?

Does it have functional AC?

It still comes with all of the extras. I'll get back to you on the AC, I have no idea right now, I haven't tried it.

Sorry for the late response. AC blows cooler than ambient, but isn't very strong. I keep meaning to get some r134/conditioner and I keep forgetting. I'm going to call the AC "questionable" for now. It did work 2 years ago, but, as we all know, things can happen when cars sit for long periods of time.

Not sure if I'm just tire kicking at this point. Do you have any pics of the car out of the shop? If someone said "road trip" and New York in the same sentence would you take the VW?

Getting better pictures outside of the shop is on my agenda.

I'd drive the VW to NY, but:

  1. I'd drive anything. I think this would make it without many problems.

  2. I'd put different wheels and tires on it first. The 15" wheels don't quite clear the brakes, as it turns out, and the 14" wheels have bad tires. I'm debating how I am going to fix it, since the spacers I had are not hubcentric and I don't trust them at all.

Yes, this is sold. If I manage to complete the engine replacement in the Xterra and sell the boat, I'm going to have all kinds of room and look a bit like Sanford and Son around here.
