By extension of that definition, is there no mid-engine? If in front of that line is front-engine, then behind that line is rear engine.

That is an SCCA mod class style definition, in which case X71 is still front engine.

Right. If any engine in front of that wheelbase centerline is front engine, then why is any engine behind that centerline not rear engine? Using a centerline as a demarcation implies only two possible categories.

SCCA agrees with your logic. In EM a front engine car must remain front engine, defined by no part of the block or cylinder head behind the wheelbase centerline. Rear or mid engine cars can flip the drivetrain so long as no part of the block or cylinder head ends up ahead of the wheelbase centerline. Therefore rear is rear, and mid is still rear!

CV shaft exits roughly where the arrow points to the downstream oxygen sensor. I'd say that's more than half of the engine in front of the front wheel centre line..

To be honest, I think weight distribution of more than 50% rear is a large part of the "mid-engine-ness" of a car. But that's just me.

My '74 914 is tempting me hard for 2022 as it is nearly complete and I am only into it for $700 so far.
I also know where I can get a 230 slk kompressor for $80 for the 914s 1.8.
It'd be tough for me to get it to FL though.
