Yeah ok but those would be primarily fwd. I was thinking you'd really probably have to be rwd to count as "mid engine".
But what is a hatchback?

In reply to nocones :
By extension of that definition, is there no mid-engine? If in front of that line is front-engine, then behind that line is rear engine.

wheel*base* centerline. ie middle of the car.
In reply to nocones :
That is an SCCA mod class style definition, in which case X71 is still front engine.
This is not a hill I choose to die on; the sight line from the driver's seat is terrible

Right. If any engine in front of that wheelbase centerline is front engine, then why is any engine behind that centerline not rear engine? Using a centerline as a demarcation implies only two possible categories.
In reply to AngryCorvair (Forum Supporter) :
SCCA agrees with your logic. In EM a front engine car must remain front engine, defined by no part of the block or cylinder head behind the wheelbase centerline. Rear or mid engine cars can flip the drivetrain so long as no part of the block or cylinder head ends up ahead of the wheelbase centerline. Therefore rear is rear, and mid is still rear!

More importantly the Ridgeline is not a truck.

I have middle fingers but more than 2 categories of fingers...

I don't care who you are, that's funny right there.
In reply to Lof8 - Andy :
Given the output from my 4age, I'm willing to take on quite a bit of risk.

Do we know of any cars where the engine is more than half in front of the front wheel centerline?
My truck, maybe. Long engine is long.
Trucks and I6s might be cheating, though.

The original FWD Eldorado , I think. The Audi Quattro cars. Maybe Subaru.

DSM's
So, Dodge Intrepid's (and LH chassis brethren) is chaotic front?
CV shaft exits roughly where the arrow points to the downstream oxygen sensor. I'd say that's more than half of the engine in front of the front wheel centre line..

To be honest, I think weight distribution of more than 50% rear is a large part of the "mid-engine-ness" of a car. But that's just me.
I don't know if this should go in this thread, the rant thread, or the minor confession thread but:
After reading all the updates a la Robbie, Jackets, Gumby, nocones et al and looking forward to seeing 2021s challenge videos and pics...
My '74 914 is tempting me hard for 2022 as it is nearly complete and I am only into it for $700 so far.
I also know where I can get a 230 slk kompressor for $80 for the 914s 1.8.
It'd be tough for me to get it to FL though.
I don't know if I hate you all or love you.

Is that an invite to set up a relay to get your car to Florida and back next year? I am sure GRM members can make this happen.
You'll need to log in to post.
