I am currently high bidder on a 944S2, 1989, 88k miles, hardtop, 5 speed. I will have real problems if I win but could not stop myself. Can be seen at iaai grand rapids auction. At this point I will get out bid but if someone wants me to check it out and bump it up I can. currently winning at $1575 This is the turbo car minus the turbo with a 3.0 NA. It will have a savlvaged title. It got totaled for a crack in the front cover and a dent in the rear quarter. Other than that is looks real nice.

Sounds like a great deal. This is similar to the turbo but don't be fooled. They are costly to maintain and not a lot faster than a regular 944. That said, this car is probably worth 3x the price you listed. How much longer is the auction?

Auction starts Monday the 20th 8:00am. Yes that's the one. I currently have a $2000 max bid on it.

Remember, since you don't know the history, assume, timing belt, along with seals, motor mounts and clutch. Electrics will have some hiccups and all filters and fluids will have to be changed. So, price, plus a grand plus labor.

Fix the nose and document the fix (because of the title) clean it up and go through it mechanically and that is a $8,000 car all day long. You would be in it for between 3k and 4k

I actually like these better than the turbo cars. Almost the same HP and I think they have a bit more torque when comparing them in stock form. They tend to be not at hammered as the turbo cars. Yes you can up the HP on the turbo cars ALOT but as a DD this is the Porsche for that task. In my book these are a lot LESS problematic than the turbo versions of these cars as well as easier to work on motor wise.

It's about 20 minutes from my house. I can start it and give it a look, listen and feel as well as try various buttons tomorrow.
It will cost auction end price + fees + $150-$200 shipping to my house.
If it is a well loved car that just had a bad day, it's owner is sad. I'm with you dean, just don't have the time...and SHMBO would not understand. My plan was to buy it, then advertise to Porsche guys and threaten to winter beater/ rally-cross it.

I expect to see a double in price on Monday. The last one I tried to buy, a Saabaru Aero 5 speed with go fasters, went for $2200.

They are actually, in real life, only a little faster than the basic 944. Mainly due to where the power band is. Also, you can't "massage" this like a turbo. But, like I said, at this price a real bargain. Not sure 8k, though. Maybe since '44 prices are going up. Funny, a boxster as A LOT more car for the money. Oh, and if you intend to track it, read up on it. '44 engines aren't that stout (ask me how I know).

With a salvage title? I'm not so sure.

I tried to type this earlier but my post didnt stick. Can anyone in IA buy at a salvage auction? Also, I would be totally in to buy you out if it doesn't go too high, assuming I can get my Challenge partner on board.

In this area regular standard 944 are commanding $8k . Yes they have to be in very good shape but the market on these is rising. The title will hurt that car but it is an easy documentation and fix so it should not hurt that one all that bad. I have seen nice DD versions of these in my area going for close to 10K. Get that one back up to snuff, fix the damage and ask 8250 and let someone talk you down to 7K. You still would make a nice little pile of $$$ on it.

I just wish it was local to me. I would be in that one.

The 944s2 is not a good track car starting point. IT really is a street car. It basically has the 968 motor in a 951 body with a regular 5 speed.

You have to register and pay the $200 annual fee. Even then you can only buy the cars that are offered to the public.

I have wanted to get one of these with a blown up motor and do a LM4 motor swap and go to the chalenge. BUT around here a decent one with a bad / no motor is $2500 all day long.

The motor in that car is worth the current bid price and you get the rest of the car with it.

Yes it is from what I understand unique to that car. Like and S14 BMW but not as good. Am I correct that the S2 has the body and suspension/brakes of a Turbo and a specific the the S2 engine?

I won't be winning this unless I get a firm commitment...or it actually goes for $2000 or less. As of now I am still winning.

Oh good, Let me know if you want me to bump my bid up on this. Just send me a refundable paypal deposit. Let me know what is a comfortable max bid and see what happens.
It's probably just a one owner pampered garage queen with full history at the local dealer. Any one want to do a VIN search?

If you want to do an engine swap, look into the Audi turbo units. And I'm talking about the 5 cylinder ones that, when modded, can do 500+ bhp. It's been done.

Given how sought after S2s are - and IMHO they are a much nicer driver compared to the regular 2.5L 944 - I wouldn't do an engine swap on one.
