So, I've got a couple hundred pounds of A356 aluminum that I've been hoarding for casting projects.  One of my internships allowed me to haul off as much as I wanted from the scrap pile.  I've got no documentation from any of this, though.

FMV I assume?

Yeah scrap aluminum price as of the day you got it.

I gathered it over a range of time.  I'll just average those days? (provided I can find the info, it was several years back at a minimum)

Edit: Looking at my Google Photos account it appears I picked this stuff up during March of 2016.  Prices seem to be $0.38-0.48 for scrap aluminum at the time, but it isn't clear if that is a cast, cans, sheet, or something else.  I'll keep digging.

If you got it for free, then it's free.

In reply to ckosacranoid :

Was it freely available to anyone?

In reply to Stampie :

Anyone that worked there, if they asked the right person and had a use for it more than selling it for scrap, yeah.

Just me but this is my example:

The dumpster was inside a controlled access gate.  Anyone with access could have grabbed that stuff but I'd rather FMV it.
