I think I'm #5. $500 it is!

I really like that idea!! Maybe we could allow cars someone spent foolish money on but aren't really competitive?
Something like a Vintage and Historic classes where cars originally 25 years old have an assigned $500 value and cars 50 years old have an assigned $250 value?
In reply to Robbie (Forum Supporter) :
Robbie Yes your value is fair. But do check those Triumph wheels carefully for cracks. I've seen too many of them fail in racing to feel very comfortable with them.
Since it will only raise the car 1/2 inch it shouldn't materially effect the handling too much. A lower profile tire will offset that raise too, but with the much stickier tires available now. Plus the numbers of failed Triumph steel wheels I've seen back when tires weren't as sticky I'd be looking for an alternative.
One other consideration, is $1500 a fair market value of the Miata running gear? I think you are over charging yourself. I'm definitely not an expert on Miata but it seems high to me.
I had to scrap the engine and gearbox from the last Miata I parted out. So yeah, $1500 is way too much, but if that is what you paid that is what it is. The challenge is after all mostly a game of bargaining for parts.
In reply to NOHOME :
It doesn't seem right to me. I mean if it was some rare expensive piece, a Ferrari engine for example. OK what you paid for it is it's FMV. But if it's something common shouldn't it be FMV? There is a whole early Miata down the road from me the owners is asking $1000 for.
I mean, I did only pay $1000 for the miata running gear, but it was still probably too much.
I guess you can probably GET a car to the challenge using just FMVs. But my guess is you will never be super competitive (as stated, good deals win the challenge, and FMV by definition isn't a good dea), so it doesn't really matter if a builder decides to go down that path.
In reply to Robbie (Forum Supporter) :
Well, if you are going to use it put it up for FMV rather than just assume it's worth X
If you asked me $500 is generous.

So my '67 Mustang has a value of $250 and I can bring her to the Challenge? I love it. I dont think it is realistic given actual FMV, but at the same time I haven't shown how much rust she actually has.
For classic cars I dont think that would work. V8 Mustangs and the like, but a 6 cyl roller? That might fly. GTO? Nope. 6 cyl Lemans? Maybe.
Something like that, maybe.
In reply to Mr_Asa :
That's the car not the engine trans suspension etc. so you'd have to add that cost to it plus the cost of the cage etc
Wouldnt leave much for go fast parts

You mean FMV the Miata drive line also?
That's not a bad idea... If I get that far along I'll consider it.

So my Model T is negative budget? Can I have 5 grand to build it?
I think for a rule like this to be fair the engine etc would also have to be of the era. No putting Tesla running gear in a fiberglass Model A body.
I mean you could put a Miller or Duesenburg engine in your Model T. If you could somehow find a engine cheap enough.
If Classic Motor sports wants to sponsor a companion event it should reflect the position of Classic Motorsports. Where affordable collector cars are celebrated.

Is there a point where a rollcage / even bar isn't required? I'm thinking of really old cars with 17-21 second quarter mile times?
In reply to frenchyd :
I'm sorry I engaged you. But why do you feel it's ok to discuss rules for an event that you have never been to and likely never will? The rules as is work great. No need for an outsider to rewrite them.
In reply to Stampie (FS) :
I think because he doesn’t really understand the point of the event. Most of the time he is adamant about not being interested, but every once in a while says he wants to go. I don’t get it.

There are no requirements for any roll bar or roll cage (even in a convertible) unless the car is faster than 13.49 (or maybe 13.99, I don't have the rulebook in front of me at the moment)

That's interesting, I didn't realize you had bought the magazine or were hired to control content.
I'm pretty sure discussions are open. If not I'll end my subscription and leave you in control.
It's true I'm not a fan of drag racing or autocross. I much prefer wheel to wheel. But I do love the whole idea of Grass roots motor sports.
My long term plans are to Snow Bird and if in the state, reason says that I should compete where it's affordable. Assuming you are in control and will welcome me.
Classic Motorsports is part of this group and I assume others with a focus on a budget and interest in older cars might find that event interesting.
It seems reasonable that if there is a subset of older cars attracted by rules and the concept of racing on a budget it would be good for the event and for the magazines.
In reply to Indy "Nub" Guy :
Thank you! I like that rule. Encourages older ( and slower) cars to compete. Myself included.
Frenchy, just show up one year. Let us know when you're coming, and i'll make sure i have something 50's or older to win with
In reply to Patrick (Forum Supporter) :
That sounds like a fun challenge. Be patient, I won't be fully retired for 3 more years. That's when I'll be Snow Birding and it will make sense.
