What's more expensive than a cheap Porsche? A FREE LOTUS!!
Here is the Lotus going to its new home on my trailer. There was a major thunderstorm that stopped traffic by the time I got to North Houston.
What happened to your other thread? It just vanished.
If you cut the frame about right over the wheels to maybe a little in front of that point, weld in some reinforcement, you could get a 4AGE and a C52 trans to sit in there sideways. I measured it once. You'd have to fab up some rear A arms, but if you don't have the trailing arms anyway, that would be one solution.

You had to use ramps to get it on the trailer? That pile of bits was light enough that Winston's wife could have picked it up and dropped it on the deck with one hand.

You just described the entire contents of my garage. I now have one of each plus a free Lincoln in the driveway.

Or a 3SGTE, which was my plan. Once you hack off the end of the chassis, pretty much anything will fit in there.
I had a certain mopar 300 hp variety in mind. 
remember the dodge intrepid was FE/FWD but with a Longitudinal layout. that would be kinda cool in the middle of a free lotus...
2.7 liter, twin turbo, 30 valves, all aluminum, V6 Audi to front wheel drive 5 speed transmission out of a passat or the like.

I am interested in the adaptor plate you mentioned to bolt up a 4AGE to the original Renault transmission. I had a 4AGE sitting around but I sold it along with some other stuff to buy the Miata. I like those motors.
How hard would it be to find an orginal transaxle and all the fittings?
The guys are using a Renault box out of a different car for most of the 4AGE conversions. I saw a S2 at LOG 26 with a blacktop in it. Very nice. The gear boxes are around. I don't remember what exactly the car was, but I did a car-parts.com search a few months ago and found a couple. You really need to join the yahoo list, get the "Knowledge Base," search that and ask questions.

If you're going to bump up the power and want to keep a bolt-up transmission, you want the Renault Fuego Turbo transmission. In Winston's case, that car had no drivetrain behind the firewall - so it would need everything from an engine, transmission, axles, uprights, arms, shifter, shocks and springs.

I have been looking for a cheap Europa around here for years, based upon seeing an Intrepid motor and transmission sitting on the ground in a junk yard. It would be a shame not to keep it a manual, but they made something like 260 hp stock and look like they should fit in the back of the Lotus nicely!

so, how would this car unfold in the budgeting? since it was given at a special price for challengers, would that mean that the actual price would have to be replaced by FMV? or is the GRM classifieds "public" enough for the "available to the general public" part of the budget rules?

I advertised it for FREE to the general public and eventually had a taker. That guy sat on his hands for six weeks and never picked it up. Since Winston was in line for it, I arranged for him take it and we rolled it down the street to his house.

That Acura Legend sounds interesting. I wonder how long the whole drivetrain is, and the distance from the front of the crank/other protruding bit to the center of the axles. Not that I have thought about it....
It's a NICE motor, too.....

Legend didn't have the 5 cyl. That was the short lived Vigor.
