NJ banned gokarts?
For as long as I've been into autocross (so since the late 80s at least) karts were not allowed at solo events in NJ due to state laws on racing. They recently changed the laws and adult karts are now allowed to autox again.
Remind me again why people choose to live in Jersey?

For my own part I was sent here by the Air Force many years ago and made the mistake of marrying a Jersey Girl so now Im trapped. But I'm working on an exit strategy (see original post, 'round the house "running away and joining the circus" is code for getting the hell out of NJ and my current line of work)

I really don't like seeing this bumped to the top.
I get really REALLY bad DD ideas from it...

Save me from myself. I just passed by NJ a couple weeks ago on my way to Boston.

A fair weather DD was the plan for the rebuild, I drove the car from NJ to New Orleans, its got good road manners. That's why the cage was pulled out though.
Make no mistakes though, when I say disassembled, I mean it. Body shell is sitting on the rolling chassis but all panels/doors are off, engine is out, interior is out. So its got a relatively complete rolling chassis with the body shell sitting on top. Ready for final bodywork and paint then reassembly. Would need a new pedal assembly worked out, the floor mounted pedals never worked well, was going to convert it to hanging pedals instead and used the floor mounts in another car.
I don't have any photos of the current state but I'll try to get some later this week.
The good part is, everything has been figured out and almost all the parts are there (except as mentioned above). Only thing you would need are new window seals (glass is out for body and paint) The other Wartburg geek in the US has all the seals for the glass and body, brand new, waiting for the car, in trade for the stock interior and motor, but hes in Cali and Im in NJ so we just haven't figured out the logistics of the swap and neither of us have been in a hurry.
So rolling chassis, with 944 front suspension/brakes with ground control coil overs, rear suspension is VW beetle with 944 brakes, VW transaxle. Porsche Cup 1 wheels with good tires. Good 2.2 Subie motor which ran a 15.4 quarter at the challenge and 2.05 around summit point. 2.0Turbo motor from a low mile (30k) wreck but the timing belt snapped in the wreck so it would need going through if you wanted to use that. I think I still have another spare 2.2 in the piles as well. The race seat was pulled out (cant recall if I have it or the interim owner kept it) but I have a full blue and black STI interior, front seats will fit great, rear is just slightly wide, I was going to cut some foam and restretch the material to work.
In reply to JThw8:
Weren't the rear brakes out of an air cooled 911? ... I'd check with Chris but I remember getting the pads off pelican parts as 911 brakes.

And I live too close. I'll be really close next weekend when I pick up a replacement tub for my tj.
Is it a 4 sp or 5? Any chance you could take pics of its current condition?

Nope, all the brakes are 944, I got them off Jessie's car when he upgraded everything, they were supposed to go on the bus I was building. The steering rack was off an early aircooled 911
I can't remember what I ate for breakfast but I know every part on that car ;)

4 speed, VW bug transaxle with Kennedy adapter for the subaru motor. Getting some current photos is on the to do list, I should have them sometime this week.

As promised, current state photos. Yes its disassembled. Nice thing is Mike (interim owner) bagged and tagged things so its not terrible. Its a pretty easy car to figure out to be honest.

Word on the WRX motor...
If that's the one I sold you, it is likely it has a bent valve or 2. Yes, that qualifies as head work, but I'd give it 80% odds that it doesn't need a machine shop.

Thanks for the clarification, I haven't opened it up so I wasn't sure how to describe it :)
Wonder how much power you can put through that box before it blows up....

More than the stock WRX motor puts out. Our local VW club guru is an ex VW drag racer, he's put up to 250 to them without issue. We had long debates about it during the build, I kept asking him what I needed to do to beef it up for the 235 the WRX motor would put out and he kept saying nothing. Finally I stopped arguing when he said he'd rebuild my trans if I blew it (sorry, offer not transferable) Usually you'll blow CV joints before transmissions. The real killer for transmissions is flex, if its solid mounted and the mounting points reinforced with something like a kafer bar (there's one in the Wartburg) it stiffens it up enough to deal with the power.
All of the above does assume a driving style with a modicum of mechanical empathy of course.

Bumping this up, I'm cleaning house and just have to cut this one loose. Make me a silly offer, make me a serious offer. Throw me a weird trade. I have just come to the realization Im not going to build this for a second time and it's time to let it go.
I really really really wish I was closer and had the time for this project
you're killing me. tempted to make a silly offer but feel like a D doing so.

rather have a silly offer from GRM family than sending it into the ether or parting it out which is soon to come.
i messaged you.

If that's Andy Nelson's old Datsun than yeah, I made the fiberglass hood off of the steel one he designed.
I'd make you a silly offer if I didn't have so many projects and too little space
This car is eat up with cool! But having just bought another Miata and a 300ZX, I am tapped out plus some. It does look like that b pillar is beefy enough to withstand a mild door slam! Construction sure has changed!
