WTB: Lego

My 4.5 year old son is huge into Lego these days. I was the exact same way as a kid and ended up with a giant collection, but my folks eventually got rid of it.

I'd love to get him a bunch of random Lego but holy E36 M3 it's expensive now. And frustratingly, everything is pretty much part of a 'kit' now, rather than just free form bricks, planks, wheels, etc.

So...does anyone happen to have a treasure trove of mass Lego that they'd be willing to sell? I would like to get him a bunch of pieces, to encourage more free thinking, rather than just following step by step instructions.

Where are you located? I do have a huge bin stockpiled, that I had similar intentions for eventually passing along to inspire creative thinking... But thats still a ways out, and my challenge car needs some parts!

Check e-bay. People sell Legos by the pound, by the color, and in huge lots of the same part.

You can also buy direct from Lego in bulk quantities for cheaper than the set costs. However I bet that eBay is your best route as you are already discovering.

When/if you get the used items off ebay then get yourself a mesh laundry bag like this, which can be bought at any store like Target.

Fill the bag and then place it on the top rack of the dishwasher. This will give you some cleaner pieces that are more ready to go into the mouth or your 4.5yr old. You know they will.

The LEGO store at Downtown Disney has a big area where you fill a bucket with whatever pieces you want from a massive collection of old-school stuff and pay basically by the pound; I would have killed for that as a kid. eBay is probably cheaper, though.

And I commend your policy of avoiding the instructions, I remember being ticked off when huge pre-fabricated components started coming in lego kits. Don't give me two halves of a fuselage and try to tell me I'm building something.

Although I was a huge fan of the Galaxy Commander, I probably built this one on 10 different occasions:

I think I had that one. I was going through some of my old toys a few years ago and I found this on, with the box and everything. I had to get a few small pieces for it to make it complete, but I sold it on ebay for almost $100 once it was complete.

Craigslist is also a good place to find some....

Don't worry too much about the kits with instructions. My 4 year old doesn't care about them anyway, he just builds what's in his imagination. When we first get a set, he and I will build it according to the instructions. 5 minutes later he's tearing it apart to build whatever's on his mind

Dang, I've got two of those complete with box. I'm saving them (along with a boat load of other "vintage" Lego) for my boys, but maybe I need to figure out how much I've got tied up in Lego.
