I've got ~2k to spend, although I'd like to spend less. Looking for a solid DD that gets decent mileage and is fun to tweak. I'm not brand specific to anything, just want something cool. 323gtx, mx6 turbo, miata, metro, something :)

Any specific part of the country? You didn't fill in your location
I suck! Atlanta GA. I had to create a new user name here as my old one is ?!?
At 2k you will likely be looking a bit longer. :)
A good driver will usually bring more then that in this area.

This is GRM. The first answer is always "Miata".
Atlanta Craigslist is a motherlode, and if you expand to include checking Florida your options will expand exponentially. $2k is a problem though, solid, decent, and fun is tough on that budget. If you can scrape up enough to reach $3k you'll have a lot more to choose from.
FWIW.
Call off the search.
Got me a CLEAN good condition 535is for....$1500. Needs a wet sand/buff or maybe just new paint, but it's like a time capsule on the inside. Nah, it aint a miata, but I wasn't going to choke down 3K for one either. I know sub 2K examples are out there.....the import atlanta kids find them before everyone and resell them for 3K :D
Theo,
Congrats on the purchase. Are used Miatas really commanding that much on the used market up there? If so, I may have something to sell up there!

A clean used Miata will bring more the 2k in most any market generally....of course turds are another story.

Depends. I passed on a 95"M" in clean condition w/95K miles on it. Was in CL for $3200. Nice car, but a smidge out of my budget. I don't buy and flip stuff, but I'm sure it was bought by someone that does and resold for 4500 if not more.
I struggled to find something because my brain won't let me pay 2500 for a 16 year old car w/200K that needs everything under the sun. And thats all I found.
IMHO, they are now about the same as 240's and RWD integras. Enter the completly stupid money for what you get catagory.....but if you have to have one, you have to pay. Yours was in the perfect range for me, but I missed it :) I now realize that I've bought a car I'll run across about a dozen of them well under what my budget was :D
Someday I'll get to put on this hardtop I've got...
I thought you sold the miata to Paul?
Interesting information. I wonder if the major markets produce higher prices.
I did sell it to Paul. But I'm picking something else up tomorrow....
