I wonder why this hasn't come back into fashion? With all of the cell phone pockets and drink holders, most vehicles with center consoles could use some extra space by getting rid of something that's not necessary-the shifter.

The new Lincoln sedans have this. Its kinda weird at first, but I guess you get used to it. Much like having a key fob and a start button instead of a standard ignition.

It IS back in fashion. New Ram pickups have it. Not to mention a lot of hybrids have what it essentially a push button shifter and have for many years.
