I'm impressed that the fuel injection is still present and it hasn't been converted to carb - although the alternator looks out of place in that engine bay.

Oh my. Parts of a steering column on the floor. No shifter. And with the alternator conversion I see that air really didn't need to blow over the actual engine to keep it cool...

I've owned both as daily drivers, albeit many years ago - square and fastbacks.
The squareback IS more practical.
Because practicality is the first thing that comes to mind when contemplating a 45 year old Vdub.
First car I ever drove right there. In Australia.
I thought it looked like a knocked-up 911.
The guy that gave me SCUBA diving lessons drove a Squareback. In fact, three adults with all the tanksand gear drove 50 miles in it to take our check dive.
