I seem to remember A1 golf's having plastic covers over the timing belt. I remember it because I had a hard time getting the lower one off. The comments over at BAT seem typical and unsurprising for that site.
I am slightly skeptical about the claim of 150hp with the stock cam, an audi throttle body and an over bore. Seems optimistic. And yes there was most definitely a timing belt cover from the factory.
I really think that good early GTI survivors are about to go way way up in value, at least at auctions.

I agree. Especially since the Audis of that era were 115 to 135 with 5 cylinders. (NA)
This is the first time I've watched a BAT auction. I guess I need to figure out the format. I thought it was about to end and then they added more time on the clock.
Wow, I saw it a few days ago, before all the idiocy started. It was like reading comments on the news.
IF that rust pictured is the worst that exists on the car then I would buy it but the auction price is a bit higher then I would pay but then auction prices on low price cars can get a bit crazy. In the past week a Ford Fiesta with some nice mods went for $6200! That's crazy money! And I like Fiestas! Owned 3 of them.
