Mine. 1985 GSL-SE with the 13B. Unmolested car that's been sitting for twelve years. Mileage is 195,000. Engine turns over but has no compression, and drags a little. I'm too busy to pull the motor or even consider a swap right now.
I went looking for the "Bright Red" 12A I had back in college and found this instead. Body is straight and ready for evil plans.
I'll consider swapping for other projects, especially two-wheeled since they're easier to store. Or I'll put this car & a donor F150 with a 5.0 engine up together towards say a running Miata or the like.
I also like quirky/oddball cars.
That's a cool little car.
Wankel heads - could this motor be revived with some oil treatment to bring back the apex seals?
If not, is it rusty? Specifically behind the front seats in the floorboards? It doesn't look like it...
You may get somewhere with the ATF treatment but TBH at that mileage I'd pull the engine.

I always thought that the ATF trick was more for seized engines that wouldn't turn over. Carbon breaks loose, jams between the apex seal and the housing, and then the starter can't get the engine to crank. The ATF is supposed to break up the carbon and free the jam, allowing the motor to spin.
In reply to wae:
I am of the understanding that the ATF is to free stuck apex seals. Meaning the seal is stuck in its groove.
If you try to turn over a rotary with seals that are stuck to the surface they are sealing against, I am pretty sure you will end up with little pieces of apex seal in your engine.
This engine seems like a case of high mileage and worn out.
Drop a 2nd gen 13B in it and go. It is a well documented swap.
A rebuild with with a mild port job on that 12a would be quick and easy. While keeping it original. The 13b would bring a few more horses to the party, but it would no longer be a FB with it's original engine. Clean early cars are going back up the curve in value.
Edit: the ATF trick is indeed for engines with a stuck apex seal. 200k is the right mileage for a well maintained NA motor to need a rebuild. Rebuild the 12a and run the piss out of it for another 200k.

This car is already a fuel injected 13B. It is a GSL SE.
In reply to Xceler8x:
I've tried the ATF trick, and the engine drags a bit when it turns over, so I'm thinking it lunched a seal. I'm up to my ears in projects right now, and reluctant to sell this one. But I'm prioritizing....
There's no rust that I can see. It's been under a carport in Lafayette, Louisiana for the past twelve years so out of the elements.
And yes, It's the 13B Fuel Injected motor with the LSD & rear disk brakes. They only did them for two years.
Derp... Forgot it was a GSL-SE, yeah rebuild it, or find another 13b port the hell out of it, and enjoy the braaaaaaaaap
Stick a 12A in there, do the mandatory track mods for safety and go Spec7 racing.
Right now it's below "Finish the kitchen" and "Sheetrock the dining room" on my priorities list.
Not to mention completely rebuilding the front suspension on my work truck which "should be" job one, but never is...
Spec 7 racers are using RENESIS engines now.
I am glad you are not closer. I keep waiting for one of these to show up in a junkyard, I need the front cover from one.

Bah, why do you have to be so far. I look for these from time to time, but last time, I bought the e21 bimmer instead.
Looks like a late production model with the color keyed mirrors. May I ask what color interior(most likely wine/maroon/whatever Mazda called it), and is it leather, or clothe? Also, power steering? Anymore pics?
Chris
In reply to Mazdax605:
It is the late (post-April) build with the color keyed mirrors. Interior is wine/maroon cloth interior. Little faded but not bad.
I can help shipping to Houston or Atlanta for a little extra.
How much extra to get it to Atlanta? Any local Atlanta members willing to store this for me til the spring?

Let me do some math and get back to you. I'm headed to Atlanta at Easter but I'd have to sort out a tow vehicle.
