More than likely a VG30DET. Hence the 300 moniker...
They would have to explain those headlight louvers...
And the exposed element "cold air intake" that is directly above the radiator.
The air box was normally there so for those who like doing quick may or may not help mods can rip that old bastard out of there and but an e bay filter on there, i think its like a +34HP mod.

No, I'm fairly sure he means VG20DET. The VG30DE was only available in the US as a twin turbo, not a single, and it looked far different anyway. The VG20 is a Japan only engine.
VG20DET for comparison - looks like the same intake manifold.
so what is the benefit? It's some kind of JAY DEE EMM motor?

There is a gigantic plastic cover that prevents the air coming off the radiator from going to that filter.
