1998 Jetta TDI project $1500 (long post)

Hi all, I have a 1998 Jetta TDI I bought broken that I have been driving and slowly refurbishing. The PO hit a center divider with the right front while trying to negotiate a left turn. The car crunched the right front corner including the right front suspension. Both airbags deployed and the seat belt tensioners both fired. I replaced all broken parts in the suspension, both airbags, both seatbelts, fixed the AC, and a few misc small parts. I then daily drove the car for 6 months or so doing kid duty. The car performed flawlessly, tracking true and never returning less than mid 30's mpg. Then the oil pressure warning chime came on. Research on TDI club indicates that the problem is rarely the actual oil pressure, but usually a faulty sensor or a vacuum problem? I parked the car until I could get to testing it. I never got around to it and I probably won't. I lost even more interest when I was moving it around the side yard and the brake pedal went to the floor. Turns out the line to the rear rusted through.

The ,car has a new windshield, good AC, good interior (needs a few parts assembled), drove well until parked, and got great gas mileage. It needs the oil pressure problem diagnosed and fixed, the brake line to the rear replaced, and a few small rust spots stopped.

How many miles? is it a rebuilt title?

The engine/chassis has 170k. The engine was rebuilt 20-40k ago while the previous owner had the car. I may have the paperwork somewhere, I will look. The title is clear with no rebuilt status. I don't think he had collision on his policy so he didn't file an insurance claim.

Ive been wanting to tdi swap a k-car for a while now, ever since seeing the awesome tdi caravan on davidsfarm on youtube.

Ive got... probably my limo would be the most likely swap candidate.

If this was for sale in california there would be 30 people in line to pick it up within 4 hours of the add being posted (i know a couple people that have got them for this cheap, one was wrecked beyond fixing, the other one is back on the road again, and there were really that many people who wanted them).

If I could afford the time/cash, I would have gone that route instead of DD. I think it would have cleared the hood better than the Merc mill.

Probably true. Better yet, you could repair the TDI as it sits and sell it for $4k!

I just wanted to be another person to chime in with, "Dang, too far away." I sure wish that wasn't 3000 miles away.
