Gotta disagree there, I have no doubt he spent the $180,000 he said he did. Unfortunately, the return percentage on selling used tools is about on par as selling a used Yugo. He might see $20 to $25K if he parts it out.

BTW, does one person really need 23 sets of vice-grips?

When you have a tendency to use them as structural components in a build...yes ;)

Wow, sort of a hap-hazard approach to a $60k sale.
Much better pictures and overall presentation would easily bring more money or an actual sale.

Here are his terms:
20% DEPOSIT DUE UPON END OF AUCTION WITHIN 48 HOURS BY CERTIFIED MAIL. I DO NOT ACCEPT PERSONAL CHECKS, ONLY BANK CERTIFIED. BALANCE MUST BE PAID IN FULL UPON PICK UP WITH IN 7 BUSINESS DAYS. IF FAIL TO PAY, DEPOSIT OF 10% WILL ONLY BE RETURNED PLEASE EMAIL FOR FURTHER PAYMENT INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE BIDDING.
Really?
$12k must be produced in 48 hours.
$48k must be paid in 7 day by bank check. Oh, you know he is going to get scammed with Nigerian Checks all day long!
If you do not meet the $48k in 7 day then he keeps $6k.

I"ve known techs like this for years. They need to buy this whole set of wrenches because it's 1/2" longer than the other set they have. This one comes with Dale's number 3 on it, gotta have that one too. When I was at the dealer our shop foreman was master auto, master body, master heavy truck and a few others as well. His entire tool collection could fit in 2/3 of the lower box that says "snap on" on it. Some folks just need to keep buying tools.

It's hard to say no when that truck rolls up with all the shiny new stuff and the smiling salesman is so willing to extend credit.

I hope there's a discount for the color of that box.

No joke. I go to the pull a part yards with a small back pack of tools, and rarely leave without what I came for, engines and transmissions included. My 3 piece Craftsman box, that's about 2.5' wide and 5.5' tall has all the tools I need to do the same job the techs I work with do, and and some of those guys probably have $20-30k of stuff from the snap on man. The best was the guy that used to run our body shop. He bought a large black Snap-On box for $8k. Two months later, they came out with a special edition Z28 box (he was a camaro freak) that he had to have, to the tune of $12k. He traded in the black box he just got on the camaro box, and once he swapped them out I noticed, the new box was EXACTLY the same box as his old box, but painted chevy orange with Z28 badges on it. He's a damn good body man, so I'm sure he could have painted his box orange and stuck Z28 badges on it for WAY less than $4k (actually more, since I'm sure they didn't give full price on his trade).

i'll defend the guy a little bit for the wrench sets, pliers, screwdrivers, and hammers, depending on the job type. that tech2 by itself is thousands of dollars new. there are so many types of sockets/wrenches/applications that if they are your source of income even a small advantage in either speed or accuracy could be worth it. i have a drawer of vice grips as you never know how many you may need for mockup/fabrication or of what type. just because you can do without a certain tool doesnt mean said tool isnt worth it.

that is a wierd selection of water pump pliers though. and not nearly enough or quality pics for anywhere near the asking price.

And I had second thoughts about buying new 40'" ball bearing Griplatch Craftsman boxes when I was flush and the 26" boxes I'd had for 15 years were beat-up and full to bursting.

My step dad was one of these guys at the Oldsmobile dealership here in town. he had every tool for every job there was. sets of tools that only were for a certain car, but he had em. a few years before he retired the place was broke into, and all his stuff was gone. He was compensated from our home owners, and the dealer ships insurance, but no where got what he had spent. he replaced with the Bare minimum to get to retirement age. (bare min for him was about 8k) My son ended up with those tools when he died. I can still rember George coming home for dinner talking about a new hire that showed up with his "lunch box" full of tools. and of course if the new tech was liked, he loaned the guy tools once in a while. lol

I fall into this kind of mentality, although it's mainly with specialty tools. I have tools I bought five years ago that are still in their original packaging. (Mitsubishi fuel sender lockring tool and Northstar water pump socket - generally by the time these are needed, the vehicles aren't worth repairing)

BUT. The first time you NEED, say, a 30mm 12-point impact socket, or a Subaru inner CV roll pin tool, or a 6" long squared-Torx socket, it's worth it.

$60k will buy you an empty Snap-On toolbox.

Do you mean a $0.99, 3/16" punch??

In reply to 16vCorey:

Add another one here.

My buddy and I scrounge junkyards with a simple tool kit. It's a 5-gallon bucket with one of those nylon bucket organisers to hold the tools needed.

We call it "stage 1" and everything needed to dismantle a 2nd gen firebird is in that tool kit.

We can strip a car in the junkyard with a bucket.

The roll pin tool is almost 2 feet long so you can actually hit the punch, not your fingers.

It also has a locator pin on the end so you don't mushroom the roll pin or bend it while it's inside the spline stub. It also has a stop so you won't drive the roll pin ALL the way through.

Have you ever had to try to drill out a roll pin because it won't come out because the $.99 punch trashed it? I have... three times. The lost time from the FIRST time would have paid for the tool twice over.

DING! And is the reason why I have justified a number of the limited use, specialized tools I own.

That's hillarious. He MIGHT get 10K for it, maybe. He's just another one of the Snap-On lemmings "ooh ooh! Gotta have the tool with the NASCAR logo on it!"
I'm not a snap on hater, heck a good portion of my tools are snap on and so are my boxes but I buy very selectively.
