There are better options out there now. For a while, Versaille brake stuff was getting hard to come by. Not sure if that's still the case. But for $500, this still may be an easy route to take.
So I'm not the only one that immediately thought "Lincoln Versailles brake swap" when I read Lincoln Versailles.

He said he's going to go aftermarket, 35 splines, etc...
Still kinda want it. Tough to pass up a $500 car!
When I was in high school, my best friend had a Granada ESS. It only had a six but had a three speed stick on the floor. It was reasonably fun back then.
Another added bonus is the front spindles swap to give you front disk brakes (I think there are minor bump steer issues (bust I think they are correctable), but I know lots of people that did it). For the rear, the biggest challanges are the shock absorber mout/leaf spring plates (assuming you are swapping from an 8" or the 6 cylinder rear). I can't remember now, but seems like the Versalle has a staggered rear shock or more verticle (there is something different where the Versaille plates don't work as is) and the driveshaft yoke is different (easy enough to chang though). I have one in a 67 coupe that has been in there since the late 80's. Seems like I had a welder frind of mine cut and reweld the position of the shock mount on the plate. Keep in mind most of these rear ends were either, 2.47:1, 2.73:1, or 3.0:1 and very few were limited slip. Mine was the 2.47:1 which was awsome for cruising behind a toploader and 351W, but not so good for acceleration. The 3rd member is easy enouch to change out though.
All that being said, as I'm going through the car again I think I'm going to replace the brakes with something a little more modern (I think the Explorer or Crown Victoria brakes bolts up with minimal modifications and parts are much easier to find).

The whole rear axle is pretty much a drop in swap.
