$900 99 neon dohc coupe

so, this one is mine, but it NEEDS to be someone elses. ive got 1500 in the car, and had it sold for 2200, right up until on the way to the DMV with the new owner to sign the title, the motor started tapping at 2000rpm.

car is a 99 neon sport. purple, im the 3rd owner from what I was told. it has 81,xxx on it. AC blowsd cold, radio (stock CD player and speakers) works great. window tracks not broken. spoiler, manual windows and locks. foglights, tilt, cruise, automatic. only non stock parts are second gen neon front seats, and second gen neon hubcaps. tires have 2500 miles on them. timing belt has 1000 on it, fresh brakes, tune up parts.

the car does not even have a speck of surface rust on the undercarriage. it is the cleanest neon ive seen in a long time. car has not left NC or been at the coast near as I can tell.

I just need the damn thing out of my head. and recoup some of my money. I don't have pictures at the moment, as its down at my dads place (close to the DMV). Ive had it a couple of months, put 1000 miles on it. no issues until the tapping, and I really don't have the time, patience, or anything else to deal with it.

so help me take a loss, guys. ill get pictures when I bring it back up here on wedsday (maybe Thursday). car is outside charlotte, NC. and yes, im willing to haggle. or trade for a Miata. or.....

Picking the car up from dads place tonight. Its dirty from sitting in time out for a few weeks, but ill get some pics up for you tonight. I listed it here first, because I figured you guys could appreciate it more than the average cl mouthbreather.

Original purple or a respray?

Origonally a purple (amethyst?) Car. Mayhave been resprayed on the front at some point.

Is it like a valve tapping or a bearing tapping?

It sound more middle of the engine. Doesn't sound like either really. And honestly, I'm so fed up with this car that I'm not willing to do too much diagnostics, and take a beating. That's why its been at my dads place, so I didn't have to look at the damn thing anymore.

Tapping seems to go away under moderate to heavy throttle. Worst under light throttle (maintaing highway speed).

Part of me thinks valve, part thinks wristpin, part thinks rod bearing.

No Mopar experience here, but in the GM world, a failing water pump can sound absolutely terrible. Could it be an accessory?

Pics will come after choir practice ttonight. I changed the oil, just to see if anything jumped out at me. Definately had a slight metallic tint to it. On the 25 mile drive home, the sound got notably quieter, to the point where I couldn't her it inside the car with the car moving. Still making the noise with hood up and revving in neutral. So that says rod bearing.... Pics in a few hours.

Sorry, no. Good luck with the sale. If it was a SOHC engine I might consider it with the auto despite my better judgement.
