This is Spinout007's old Challenge car. I was hoping to revive his old thread, but he killed the pics and links.
He was selling it for a GRM price of $1200. I'll take $850.
I bought it from him, and have done nothing to it except drop the price.
Well, that's not true. I swiped the suspension and brakes from it.
I had an MK1 GTI and this one, with some decisions to make. This had a better suspension, but the MK1 had a better motor. Both were GTI's. Both were orange with black hoods. Both had been to the Challenge. This a better chassis, but I had a bit of love for the original MK1 body style.
In the end, my MK1 won out, and I took the suspension from this car and put it on the other one.
This car now sits on MK1 struts and springs, which are a terrible fit. It is 2" too high in the front, and 2" too low in the back, but it rolls.
It's a solid straight car. Engine runs, but smokes on start up. Good project.
It came with an assortment of springs and struts in it. You can have your choice to go with it. It also has a spare (LSD?) trans. Car is now in Albany, GA. 31721
I'll try to get more info and pics up tomorrow.
Paul if you recall I told you it came to you on, a1 suspension bits. Just modified a bit to fit the a2. Some of the spare suspension bits included cut and revalved a1 struts, tokico shocks, eibach 2.5" springs in various rates and lengths. A full a2 kyb gr2 setup with a full set of a2 sportline springs. The spare trans was a 020 trans from a scirocco (prob butchered that). So it should be a LSD trans. The transmission in it currently is a LSD trans tested on dirt, never could get a peg leg spin out of it and that's with 3/4 of a mile worth of slightly twisty dirt drive to test it in. The suspension setup that was on it came from a balled up ITC car, as well as all the spares. I'll get you some pictures when I get to a real computer. Or you can just search for my screen name in Picasa and look at the challenge pictures.

Let me know. Make me an offer- I'd like to see it gone.
None of the VW transmissions ever came with an lsd from the factory.
So unless an aftermarket one was installed in that tranny, it has an open diff.

Is that correct?
Is there a reason that standard LSD testing (lift wheels off the ground, and see if they spin in the same direction) would not work on a VW?
The axles on mine do not counter-rotate. They turn the same direction when there is no load.
I've seen repair kits and upgrade kits on vw tuning sites. I find that hard to believe.
Trust me, they're all open diffs. Unless a quaife or a peloquin diff got installed, they're all open.

That's because the axle flanges are pre-loaded.

The website I linked said:
The springs and cones were added by VW "to locate the shafts free of play" and they did this to stop rattles and noises from the flange area. It was never intended as a 'mini-slip' or any type of traction enhancing device... it was just to stop the parts from making noise. When the car was put on a lift, and one tire spun, and the other spun the same way, and this led mechanics to erroneously think it was a LSD of sorts, but it is not.

That's what I needed to know. Good info. Thanks.
OK, did you see that, internet? Someone here posted some wrong information. It was not intentional, it was a case of misinformation. There was some discussion about said incorrect info. Somebody that was not involved in the discussion posted the correct information. The poster of the incorrect information showed graciousness for the correction.
There was no deuchbaggery behavior by any of the parties involved. Why can't that happen everywhere else?
Reason #4390.2 why I love this board.
Thanks for correcting that, good to know.
Amen Doc!
I wonder if that pre-loading exists on any other cars? That's interesting.
