I've seen and HAD a lot worse.
If my garage was not full, I'd be packing up and going to Cleveland right now.
The metal can be reasonably gotten here- http://alfaparts.net/
As it sits, it would be a pretty easy vintage racer. Also, even though the budget would be tight, it's a very possible Challenge car- if someone wants to do a decent autocross set up just to take a cool car like this, shoot me a note.
But....
Get new seat covers and carpets here- http://reoriginals.com/ or here http://www.centerlinealfa.com/
Making the engine a little hotter is pretty easy, too.
Basically, making a hot rod like mine (which is a BLAST) should be able to do for under $15k (more or less depending on who here is doing the work) and would be easily worth $30k when done.
Come on, someone has to get this car. I even have spare parts that this car does not need.
One more thing- right now, the ad is 19 hours old.
I will be stunned if it lasts 48 hours. If you want it, get it.
If you are in the Ann Arbor area, I would be happy to let you use my trailer, which fits this car perfectly. alfa(seventy-three)@Comcast(dot)net.
Seriously. (although, I should think about my trailer tires, they are old)

If he can have a written guarantee that the car isn't hot, getting one is more about time than anything else. Although the process varies from state to state.
That is one of my favorites of all time.
Too much body work and too little skill fixing it though would turn that $1800 into "Should have spent the money for a better one" really quick. How come they are never rust free, no engine, trans but otherwise complete at that money?
In reply to Huckleberry:
You may be joking, but the worth of decent and complete ones is pretty darned high. Great ones are worth a lot. So any rust free ones would be restored to as close to original as possible. Or something like a car of the past. I'm tempted to cut my race car down to a street car again, as many people want a hot rod like that.
The thing about the engine- they are real gems. And incredibly rebuildable. Blocks are strong, cranks are strong, and pistons and liners are really easy to replace. The main issue is the head- if someone overheats and warps it. And for these 2.0l engines, any head from '72-81 would work just fine- so there are no shortage of Alfa plug in parts.
It also "helps" that swaps are a major PITA, and require better fabrication skills than what this car needs for body work. I saw one guy trying to put an S2000 engine in one- not sure if he ever finished or not. I think the most I would attempt is to cut in a Miata front subframe, but I don't think it will work, as the Miata had the engine farther back than the Alfas. Then again, I like the Alfa 2.0l over the Miata's 1800.
Seriously- if anyone wants one of these cars- this is a great one for the price.
