Damn, I really need on of those to complete my Type 3 collection. I've got a few Fastbacks and a Notchback, but I've never owned a square.

I know of a 914 engine languishing in someone's garage.

We had a squareback in high school Driver Ed to teach the mysteries of the third pedal to 16 year olds.

Cool car.

Floors need attention!

My wife grew up riding around in the back seat of one of those - complete with view of the road through the floor.

I should buy it for her. She'd kill me.

Not just a squareback but an early roundnose not a pignose. Do want!

Very cool.

AND it's a 2-door!!

Aren't all squarebacks 2-doors?
Aside from Transporter/Bus variations, was there ever a 4 door ACVW?

Yes, all Type 3s were 2 doors (3 if you count the hatch on a squareback)

I cant think of any 4 door variants of an aircooled now that you mentioned it, although I never gave it much thought.

Can you elaborate on that please? I don't speak Type III.

No. In high school we had a red one with a stick that was 4 door. It was to teach manual shifting. Good times there.

Could it be that in school you had a VW 412 Sedan fastback?

These 412's also came in a wagon version but the wagon was two door.

Seems that yes, there was one variation of 4 door Air Cooled VW.

No, I graduated in 1971, I believe the 412s came after that. Now that I've rerun the memory tape I believe it was a two door. I'll never forget the little red head cheerleader squeezing past the front seat...

The Instructor was also the football coach. The car had pedals and mirrors on the passenger side but no wheel. This little cheerleader was sitting behind the wheel when a gym class broke out onto the field, they had to pass the Driver Ed cars. Some of them started rocking the car, the girl was upset, the coach shooed them off. She backed the car up and stalled it and they all laughed. The coach who Auto-Xed a BMW 2002 whispered "Put your feet flat on the floor, hold the wheel at 10 & 2, relax."

He revved that thing up to the cigarette line and side stepped the clutch launching it down the drive with the girl squealing like a banshee. I seriously did not think we were going to make the turn at the end.

We did.

Type IIIs came in 2 variants the early cars and the late cars. Im a little fuzzy on it but I think 1968 was the cutover.

The early cars have much more attractive features such as smaller taillights and a rounded front nose. The nose on the late cars is more flat and less attractive.
