Not exactly.
I've never heard of a FWD trans failing.
But the car is an enormous performance compromise.
The FWD version was introduced to try to offer a cheaper alternative to save the SVX from its dismal sales reports. I guess some genius bean counter thought if they could drop the price a few thousand people wouldn't notice it's quirky appearance, and run to the dealers to buy them. Duh.
They took a luxury Gran Tourismo car and branded it as trying to compete with cheap FWD imports, at twice the price.
With a $35k price tag (in the early 90's), it's obvious the market they should have been targeting was doctors and lawyers. Only problem was, Doctor's and lawyers don't drive Subarus.
They should have taken a lesson from Lexus and Infinity and taken the name "Subaru" off the car. Instead they expected doctors and lawyers to run out and buy a car associated with Pacific Northwest hippies and lesbian figure skaters.
Unusual color for an SVX. And a lot of people think they are all FWD, since they aren't marked as AWD anywhere on the car like other subarus. So you never know. I like the red, though.
Coming from my experience (I have a '92 SVX) I can't imagine that power going through just the front wheels. Especially with 4.44s, they feel a lot quicker than 230 hp/230 tq would suggest.
AWD transmissions can be okay - get an external cooler and add a Quickchange module to get rid of the line drop when it shifts and they seem to last a lot longer.
