My dad had a '95 454 3/4 ton Suburban, and he never got near 12 mpg. He did use it to tow a 11,000 lb boat, though.
I'm in love with the 454 in my dad's C30-based car hauler. It's a crew cab on a stretched frame with a dually axle and about a 24' box, and that motor doesn't even notice if the box is loaded or not. Big hill? Put the pedal to the carpet - no need to downshift, it just pours on some more steam.
And the damn thing will walk my 1500 with a 305, while getting returning about the same MPG, which is pretty depressing.
my mother in law drives a 3/4 Suburban witih the 454 as her DD. She averages 12mpg. (all by herself 90% of the time mind you.. and they don't own a trailer... )
That said, I do like being able to borrow it :)
