Semi-serious question; what could be done to improve the MPGs on this beast, excluding diesel swaps? Basically I'm thinking improvements to the 454, or some other engine that could bolt to the existing TH400 trans.

yeah. don't think engine swap. think 4L80-e swap. and maybe if you think it'll still move, go 3.73 gear because it probably has a 4.11 or 4.56 now.

Great deal. I was looking for when of those but picked up my k3500 instead.

4L80E is about all that's going to help, you might eek out a little more with EFI, but the quadrajet is already a very efficient carb.

EDIT: and synthetic everything throughout the driveline.

Gear vendor overdrive unit, smooth out the air flow, 3.55 gears, grease and lube everything

Just don't buy it and expect the economy fairy to visit. It is what it is. But I would suggest 8 would be more realistic. I could be wrong.

I always wondered how the 8100 Vortec would do in a truck that has a 454, assuming you kept the EFI....I'm guessing you'd pick up a little power and torque, but I kinda doubt you'd ever see double digit MPG.

The only way you would see double digit MPG is 6BT or similar swap.
