In my very limited experience with Saabs so far, I think they came from the factory with the check engine light on.
It's shocking how many times I find SAABs with the wrong spark plugs in them. Pun intended.
It could very easily just be a bad ignition cassette caused by old worn out plugs, or the wrong plugs. You must use the factory specified NGK plugs and change them before they wear out to keep a DI cassette healthy. SAAB doesn't use fancy plugs, they are not expensive at all.
None of my SAABs have had CEL problems. To be fair, none were newr than a'97 9000.
