Ahh the engine that ruined diesels for 'murica. Can't you convert to gas and isn't the block really strong?
Great add. Not so great a car. I have seen one with 400K on it though. It took 3 sets of heads to get it there.

I thought generally being slow, stinky, and expensive ruined them for 'murica.
I mean, the F-85 didn't ruin turbos for us, did it?
The DX block is the one to have. Yes, it can be converted to gas. For half of what he's asking it would be interesing.

This was a gas engine hastily converted to diesel. They blew up constantly.
The 350 diesel is widely credited with ruining diesels for America.

The F-85 was a high compression engine hastily converted to turbo power by relying on water injection.

As I recall, they didn't come with jack squat for diesel fuel filtration/water separation from the factory out of fear people would bitch about clogged filters. Which killed a lot of injection systems.
And maintenance has nothing to do with inadequate head gasket design and clamping.

Thanks for the article link.

so it isn't a converted gas engine like most think....interesting.

From the parts list it sounds like they just beefed up the current parts at the time. Not a straight convert perse but not a fresh sheet - designed as a diesel engine.
The #1 problem was weak head bolts. IIRC they used the same head bolts from the gas engines that were running 8:1 compression on diesel with 18:1 comp. so yeah, head gaskets blew, over heated and cracked a ton of heads. There are a lot if guys running turbos on their 350 diesel along with copper head gaskets and ARP studs.

Some aspects of it's design were similar to the gas engine, but it shared no parts. The best you can say is that it was loosely based on the gas engine, but it wasn't a converted gas engine like many have perpetuated over the years.
Holy Cow, a 10 hp starter!
Who had plans/ideas for a starter motor go kart?
Rock Auto has some for around $120
There was a guy on a truck board that had used ARP studs and MLS head gaskets on one of those dropped in a extended cab C1500 supposedly knocking down mid 30's in the mpg department. I'm sure there was more work but, dang most people throw those away or scrap em. I would love one to play with.
