NMSA (not mine, semi-affiliated) I work with the guy who is the owner's neighbor.
There are 3 local to me; a white one, a red one and one that is yellow and black. I don't know what year they were made, or if that's even relevant. They all have engines but only the white one is installed. I doubt they run, they've been tucked away in a shed for a few years and are covered in schmutz.
I was told they've been put on craigslist a few times but never sold and now he wants them gone. If I had the time, knowledge and space I'd like to snag one for an E.V. project.
$250 each was the price I was quoted.
If you're interested shoot me a PM and I'll see if I can arrange the deal. Myself, my co-worker and the owner all work 3rd shift, so scheduling the meet, should anyone show interest, might be a bit of a hassle. But I don't mind helping a fellow addict.
These are VW powered, right?
Ugh you're only 3hrs away too....
We are missing a key bit of info here. Which version?
The horrifyingly ugly first one?

Or the less hideous but still awkward GTII?

The GTII Has a lot more potential and I think it would update well. The Original GT is just Bleh.

The GTII also has a unique windshield that will cost you a small fortune if you can even find one which is why the first Gens are actually more popular.
only 3 hrs away from me too pm sent.
Sorry just woke up. They are the first body style.
Off to check my e-mail...
I still have a corvette windshield I bought for mine but didn't sell with it. Maybe a rear plexi too. Screaming deal for a GRMer.
Sent my co-worker a message asking for the guy's contact info. I'm off tonight, he isn't.
I thought they looked pretty neat in the pics he sent me and what I've been able to find online. It is a bummer they weren't more popular.

I wonder if the body of one of these would fit over your Lot Lizard?

I spent a decade of my youth lusting after those things.
I probably still have some of the original sales brochures.
Would those be challenge legal? Technically a kit car?

The current rules do not have a kit car exclusion, so it doesn't really matter:

It's a shame these are not worth more. Running, driving ones only go for @$1500. I bought on last year from a guy here, but it got flooded before he could get it on the trailer.....
I was looking forward to playing with it, looked fun
Must have been cutter. Same thing happened to me with a 928 s4 he had.

"Any four-wheeled, production-based vehicle that was originally sold as a passenger vehicle is allowed. (You know what this means.) Vehicles that don’t fit this category or exceed budget may be run for exhibition only."
I don't think this would be considered a production vehicle...

I completely disagree.
It is a VW, and was built as a production-based passenger vehicle.
The previous version of the rules said no kit cars, and that original body parts had to be on the car in their original location.
The current version says neither of these.
Don't read into it. There is not a rule against kit cars, nor one that requires original body panels.

Hmmm...that's a slippery slope. At what point does it cease to be a production car then? For instance, all the mechanical portions including suspension pickup points on my sand rail are production VW. But its not a production car. but if you are making the argument the "frame" of the VW constitutes the car I could easily build the same sand rail keeping the VW frame...would that be legal?
Neither agreeing nor disagreeing with you, just thinking, especially in this case, as the body is a structural member on a beetle that it might be a very grey area.
My thoughts on challenge rule "grey areas": everyone keeps worrying that someone will exploit a "grey area" and unfairly dominate...well it hasn't happened yet. We have had a circle track truck, a Zamboni, a hot rod beetle, a funky Isetta, etc... and none of those have won, much less dominated. Heck, GRM themselves built a nutso Berkely and it wouldn't have won. Building insane stuff for the challenge is good magazine fodder and should be encouraged, but it's hard to build insane that wins. If someone eventually exploits some loophole and it gets boring to write about, then they should worry about it.
