The steering is probably normal BMW front end wear.

Some came with GM transmissions from the factory, may be worth looking into. Could make a swap real easy.

The 5L40 has zero relation with the 4L60.

That is assuming that it's a 5L40 to begin with. I thought those were only found behind 6-cylinder BMWs and Cateras. I would think that a V8 would have a ZF trans.
