Wish me luck.
First thing first: I didn't buy it.
I suppose it qualifies as a barn find, because the seller dragged it out of a barn (shown in the first photo) three weeks ago. It had been sitting there for 28 years. He was a Packard restorer whose lawyer/neighbor was settling an estate and came to him because he was a car guy.
It appeared to have received an amateur restoration in the 70's. The repro vinyl seat covers were in great shape, but the paint was peeling and and the engine and drums were locked up. The frame looked great and the body appeared to be solid, but I wasn't interested enough to start laying the magnet on the body panels. The windshield glass was delaminating and the wiring was awful. The tires were understandably shot. It wore Calfornia black plates dated 1963 and was last registered in 1984. The best thing that I can say is that it appeared to be complete.
He wanted $4500 for it and I had about $2500 in my pocket, but I never even made an offer. I just wasn't feeling it.
Sounds like a full restoration. Did you check the body wood for condition? Replacing that can be expensive and tricky. You used to be able to buy a car like that for around what you had in your pocket, though this was 10-15 years ago.
I wanted to check the body wood but couldn't see any of it as all the interior trim was in place. At that point, I already knew that I wasn't buying it.
