I have a buddy that recently picked up a nice '96 Legacy beater. He's a Mazda tech and according to him "the engine is fuel washed and has a serious lack of power and burns more oil than gas." So he's looking for something to replace the engine.

Any leads are appreciated. Thanks.

Unless its a 96 outback automatic did they even come with a 2.5 in 96?

I don't know what the transmission is, but this guy would definitely know the year and cam configuration.

I don't know what help this is (because I don't have an engine to sell) but my '97 Legacy Outback Wagon with a 5 speed has the 2.5, to the best of my knowledge (I've not personally counted the liters)

Mid '90s Outback cheat sheet: '95 was 2.2 only. '96 5 speed was 2.2, '96 auto was 2.5 with the oddball ECU that requires premium and makes 10 fewer hp than '97. '97+ is all 2.5 regardless of transmission.

If it is indeed a '96, is 2.5, and it's not an Outback, it's a GT.
