This one is mine, some association
Trying to get some cash/space/time together for a new project and I've decided it's probably time to let this one go.
Short version: needs work, lots of potential, $1000. Here's the long version for those who are interested:
It's an 80's-tastic 1987 Merkur XR4Ti. Turbo, fuel-injected 2.3L Lima engine, 5-speed trans, independent suspension all-around. Designed by Ford Europe and hand assembled in Germany! Luxury and power in an economical and stylish package! Ok, seriously, it's a piece of crap. But, it could be a ton of fun for the right person.
HISTORY: I bought this car as a joint venture along with a couple other friends and GRMers a few years ago. We had grand aspirations of running this in LeMons, but it never happened. We spent a lot of time taking care of a lot of issues and it's much better than when we got it, but still needs more TLC, or someone who knows 80's era Fords.
When we got the car it had a blown head gasket so we removed the manifolds, turbo and head. Everything was still straight and the bearings were good, so we put on a new head gasket set and put it back together. Ran into a ton of wiring issues after that, so we replaced the engine wiring harness with a good used one (was in excellent condition, but still 25 years old).
We got the car started up but the turbo and exhaust manifold flanges were warped and leaking massive amounts of exhaust gas. We fulled the turbo and manifold again and trued up the flange faces with a flycutter on a mill. They're good now. Everything was put back on again. Got all the plumbing and wiring hooked up to find out that the fuel pumps had died from sitting for so long. Replaced the high-pressure pump and finally got it started again a couple weeks ago.
CURRENT CONDITION: Car is hard to start, but I've driven it around the lot where it's stored for 20-30 minutes on a couple occasions recently. The car is down on power and doesn't want to rev past ~3k rpm. No smoke or knock/detonation. The fuel system needs more work and there are probably some more vacuum leaks to fix. But, at this point I think the right person could get this car running well without too much pain. Possible oil leak - maybe rear main seal. Bad T/O bearing (works, but makes lots of noise when clutch is out). Don't think the alternator is charging. Have a spare but it doesn't seem to work either Brakes kinda work, but I wouldn't trust them on the street - need to be bled at least, but don't drag and they do stop the car at least at low speed.
Interior is rough but I think we've got all the parts for it and most of them are still in the right spots. Needs headliner and seats recovered. Most of the gauges don't work (not hooked up). Has some Sierra RS parts. Power windows both work great. Sunroof works great and doesn't leak (hand-crank).
Exterior is OK. Looks decent from 20' but the black paint is peeling in places (was red previously). Body is pretty darn good with only one or two small dents and zero rust that I can find. Underbody and wheel-wells all look fantastic. Has the great Ford BBS knock-off wheels (have all the center-caps). Driver's exterior door handle needs attention, but works. Rear hatch release needs work (doesn't latch - common issue I hear). Rear spoiler is badly cracked (have spare). I have all the parts for the front-end (bumper, bumper support, fog/turning lights, front fascia, etc). All in good shape.
SPARES:
- Hood
- Extra front fascia panel
- Bi-plane rear spoiler
- New brake rotors

- Brakes bled (at minimum)
- Leak on coolant reservoir fixed
- Oil leak addressed?
- Work on gauges
- Tires?
Ok. So, that's most of the story on this car. I really love the thing and think it's quirky in a really cool way, but I don't have the time to keep working on it. Like I said, I've had it running and driving at low speed recently, but it's real hard to start and down on power. Definitely needs to be trailered. Located in Atlanta, GA.
I'm asking $1000 (GRM Price) which is quite a bit less what we have into it. You should be able to part it out for more than that if you wanted to. Have a clean GA title. Would also consider making a deal for seat time with someone who want to turn it into a crapcan racer or already is running a team.
I also have a nice spare set of Borbet 5-spoke wheels (80's era) that fit the car and would consider throwing those in for the right price.
Car has 4 years of dirt sitting on it. Would be happy to wash it up and take more pics if anyone is interested. Didn't have time today.
Celica also available for the right price/buyer - more on that later, or PM me if really interested.
