Use your money on any old E36 and save money. There is nothing special about that car that means anything to anyone. You would change all the suspension, update the motor & diff, dump anything left in the interior and do a lot of reinforcement on the chassis before you were going to use the term "motorsport" in conjunction with it.

A $500 non-running 325/328 makes for a better start. ESPECIALLY if the point is to work on it.

found an 81 320 i liked, looks like a solid car but the maintenance is way to up to date for my liking and he wants like 3k for it

Thats exactly what I want, been looking for e30s actually rather than the e36 I like the look better on the older ones

E21s are creeping up in value, 3k doesn't sound far fetched.

I like the E36, but only one picture is another red flag. If his price was $1000, there would be more interest.

This is fine as a parts car, but as a driver a $1,800 E36 becomes a $6,000 E36 pretty damn quickly....
