I don't know MG's well enough … I do think that they came with some sort of wooden dash … at least at some point in their history

That's not original. Almost looks like it's laid right over the stock dash.

Probably not. Midgets of that era had a puffy dash with foam over it. Unless all that was scraped off that wood wouldn't fit over it. The dash is relatively easy to remove entirely, though. MG sports cars didn't have exposed wood on the dashes after the MGTC was replaced by the MGTD in 1950. The TD dash was covered in a vinyl-like material called Rexine, though many current owners like to put wood dashes in their cars.
