My cousin called to offer me a free RV travel trailer. It is in a park in coastal Delaware (near Dewey I think). Its his vacation place and this year he went down to find it had multiple leaks.
The good:
1- its free
2- its a 96 Dutchmen 36'
3- clean title
4- A/C works
The bad:
1- multiple leaks, lots of mold and rot on the floors
2- hasnt been moved in 13 years, tires likely rotted.
3- house-type toilet instead of RV type, but he couldn't tell me if the tank was still there or if it had been converted to go straight into the park sewer.
4- 12v converter bad, so furnace doesn't work.
5- slide room has been re-roofed with rubber that goes up the side and across the main roof. It will have to be removed before sliding in.
6- unknown if any of the running lights work, brakes, etc.
I did the math, and for four tires and fuel to get it to central PA was going to run me near $800. I didn't want to invest $800 on something that might be a waste. I figure - worst case scenario you could strip the skin and get scrap value for the aluminum, burn the wood, copper and stainless could be recycled for a little cash, and you'd be left with a 36-foot, 11,700 gvw steel frame. Pop on some good tires and $300 worth of PT lumber, and you have a lovely 2-car flatbed.
I would do it myself, but $800 just to get it here without having seen it in person... I passed.
