I thought they arrived from Japan with Rust already on them, or maybe that was a dealer installed (manditory) option. ?

I dragged one home in 1997 or 1998 for $100. I had a shop put a few hundred bucks of work into it for me. I used it as my beater at the time because I was in the field 3 days per week. I grew to really like it. 35+mpg when beating it, 40 if I cruised the highway. Definitely a momentum car, but it was a lot of fun in the twisties. Sold the thing for $600 to some kid who used it for his newspaper delivery route. Ahhh...memories.
They weren't too exciting to drive, hence the nickname "Quaalude", but they do have a certain nostalgic appeal these days. I nearly bought one in the late 80s.
It seems like 90% of these Japanese survivors are automatics, so a manual transmission-equipped car seems like a real find. This looks like a very good starting point for someone looking for a classic Japanese coupe. I'd be tempted if it were a little closer.
