I have two of them. I had three of them until last weekend.
I wonder how rusty that one is. I own this car's twin but the rear shock towers are mostly missing.
Woody, the guy you met certainly wasn't alone in restoring one. There are quite a few.

The Turbo cars were '84 and '85 only. This is an '86 Sport Coupe, which = 1.9HO

It was a sign of the times. Personally, an Escort wagon with the GT/EXP rims like those above would be the coolest.
I lived close to Detroit during the mid-late 80's,and got my license in '84...that was when it was really cool to see 'boy racer' parts on the plebian cars (Escort/Omni etc.) in order to fight the Civic.

They're simply a lightweight car with a decent chassis and retro looks at this point. I didn't buy one new and I probably wouldn't have if given the opportunity when they were. It helps that they're practically free and very uncommon now.
... and I agree with the wagon sentiment above, except I'd also want the GT engine and trans in the wagon.
