I believe they're interference engines, so could be more work than it's worth. I've seen "belligerent drunken rages" do worse.

Not worth $1800 unless you already have the parts to fix it. It is for sure an interference engine, and it likely made quite a mess when the timing belt broke.

2003 is not a PD engine - it's an ALH (I own a 2003 TDI). If it was only the busted timing belt, the price wouldn't be too bad - about $1000 for a new head plus another few bills for a TB kit. Of course, I say this already having the tools to do a TB job on an ALH. Fingers crossed none of the valves broke and damaged a piston and/or cylinder wall. Then the car is basically junk to be parted out.

However, the busted windows decrease the value substantially. I'd give him maybe half his asking price. And that's only after seeing the car in person to determine if there was rain damage.

Pumpe Duse was introduced in the 2004 model year. It's also when they started putting some little chrome accents on the grill and side moldings.

Is it just me or do all VW's from this era smell like crayons inside? It's so weird...
