I'd be very careful with one of these - the actual structure of the car is pretty much invisible with all the body panels including the roof being bolted to it, and said structure can rust like nobody's business.

They're neat cruisers though - I owned the V8 version in the UK for a while and only sold it when I needed the cash to buy my house there.

if you haven't found out more about this car yet, you might want to educate yourself. In the late '60s, when these were offered for sale in the U.S. they were considered to be as "groundbreaking/advanced" as the BMW 2002 would be a few years later. A "sporty" British sedan, with the requisite leather and wood interior, a torquey 2 liter engine (replaced in 1970 by the now ubitquitous Rover, ex-Buick V8), and a De Dion rear suspension. If I remember the print ads correctly, they were also supposed to be advanced when it came to safety features (4 wheel disc brakes, and a construction (that boxheadtim refers to)) that allowed them to sustain a pretty good "hit" with the passengers none the worse for it. Unfortunately, their downfall was that they were British.

A fellow club member had one of these in mint condition and it still was a bitch to keep going.

From a technical point of view these were brilliant, and at least the earlier ones had the build quality to match (once BL ran the whole mess, not so much). They were originally designed to take a gas turbine engine and thus there's a lot of space in the engine bay, plus they have strange details like the front springs (and I think the shocks, too, but I'm not 100% certain about those) being horizontal and actuated via a lever, all in the name of being able to make the engine bay as wide as possible. Compared to these, the SD1 Rover that followed was a return to horse and buggy times; the P6 is much more technologically advanced.
