Wait a minute, Since when does reverse have a synchro? I admit that I have never torn down one of these 6 speeds, or even a FWD trans, but I have never seen a syncro on a reverse. Am I wrong? On my Z, if it won't go in rev, put it in first to stop everything, then back into reverse.
Curious about this as well. I think my Saab 9000 had a reverse synchro, but doesn't seem to me like an issue requiring teardown and replacement.
If the guy is talking to scrapyards to unload it, seems like this should be a very sub $1k purchase if you show up with a dolly and cash.

My thoughts exactly.
Too much money for the risk that it's sucking oil.
Wow, just did a bit of googleation into this oil burning thing .
So basically while the engine is out for the rebuild, you crack the trans to replace the reverse synchro?
Guess that explains why he was calling scrapyards.
I love that I learn something everyday on GRM!

A lot of newer transmissions. The newest Japanese non-synchro reverse I can think of was my '85 RX-7 - they got synchros in '86.
In reply to Brett_Murphy:
Why yes, yes it does. With a little work, it'll take a 3.5 V6.
If it came with one from the factory, I'd still have mine. Always loved the car, hated the fact that I didn't trust the QR25. I, too, would assume stock precat + 160K =
