If you're head is good, maybe try to put together a 20/20? Using an ABA bottom end (common as dirt), the 1.8t intermediate shaft into the ABA bottom end, a 2.0L 16v timing belt tensioner, and (I think) a 157 tooth timing belt. Something like that. I may be off on a few details, but if you've got a good head you can lego the rest together.

Okay I'm not one to point fingers. But this is all your fault. You and that Lego E36 M3 is what got me in to this mess. LOL.

When you have a min. Ill need more info on this "20/20". Thanks.

1.8t's are decent. VERY restricted by the stock turbo, but maybe you could get the holset for sale on the boards to work? with something that big though, youd have to worry about being able to move before spool lol, that thing would probably take forever to spool with a 1.8 driving it..
1.8t with a different "t" is a good idea though.

20/20 is simple, sort of. You have to block a bunch of oil returns in the back, odd length timing belt, and you need a certain tensioner as well to get it working. I can't remember if the center intake clears a stock ABA piston and it might need to be fly cut. IMHO unless you have a head and nothing else, I'd just do a full 1.8t longblock to keep it simple. The rods from the earlier 1.8's (and 2L 16v) will fit if rebushed for the smaller wrist pin and are much stronger.

I have a parts motor that you can have for the cost of shipping from PA, or if you just want some of the parts.

It is an AWP motor from an 04 GTI 1.8t. The valves are a mess, a piece broke off of one or two and rattled around the combustion chambers, so the tops of two pistons are a mess as well. The block is good, as are the crank, cams, manifolds, etc. It is nearly complete, so just tell me what you need,

would a vr6 not be a viable option?

No. He's working on an Audi A4, I believe. Sounds like Sonic's stuff is the way to go, if you can put one together out of the two. Around here complete 1.8t engines are still bringing pretty high prices.

Tons of K04's around and there are even vane swaps for the K03 that make decent power.

There are two "style" cranks. Aeb and atw use the same as the "old" vws but with a trigger wheel and all other codes have a chain drive for the oil pump thats not on the early crank.

In reply to Paul_VR6:

So what your saying is that I can use the crank form any 1,8t that has a chain drive oil pump. No matter the AWM or what ever the eng is stamped?

YES!

The end of the crank is machined different, at least on the early AEB cars. The automatics have a larger bored recess in them and the pilot bearing will not fit.

I found this out the hard way rebuilding my 99.5 1.8TQM with a motor donated from an automatic.

I resolved it by having a bushing machined to make up the difference, but it was still another unforeseen delay when everyone had told me "they're all the same... blah blah blah"
