I'm going to be taking my DD 318TI off the road shortly for some major engine work, and am looking for something cheap ($1000 or less, ideally) that needs some minor fixing/assembly. Then I could use this car to get to work and back for the next few months while I work on the TI.

My only stipulations are that the car be from the 20th century and have a stick. In a perfect world I could find an old Volvo wagon or a Saab coupe. Total cost of the car and getting it to Knoxville, TN should be under $1500.

If anybody's thinking about selling a sidelined project or has seen something on their local Craigs, I would definitely appreciate being pointed that way. Thanks for reading.

dude, seriously, you have like a billion bazillion options outside of K-town. Not to mention Atlanta is down the street.

what are you wanting, car, truck, van, suv, future challenge fodder?

Wagon or coupe, if I had my preference. Top choices would be Volvo 240s, Saab coupes, old Hondas, Subarus, or non-Diesel Mercs.

I know there's a ton of stuff around my area, but I just wanted to check with GRM too. People here more accurately represent what they have than the general population. Plus someone might have something wacky they've been thinking about cutting from their fleet. Just wanted to put out a feeler.

I have a '92 Mark VII LSC. While it doesn't tick all of your boxes it's a solid old car.

I just re-parked it and covered it for the winter after driving it to and from work for the past week.

I have been considering selling my '85 Celica and could let it go for ~$1500. It needs most of the rubber bits replaced (tires, bushings, etc) and it's a little iffy at high speeds, but it fits the bill otherwise. It's my daily driver at the moment. Runs great, RWD, 5 speed, etc. Can deliver it to Knoxville on my way to Indy sometime in the next two weeks or so. Fair warning, it's way E36 M3tier now than it was in the photo and thread, but it should give you some idea of the car.

Here you go... Should tick most of the boxes.

I saw that one, definitely on my list.

In reply to JohnyHachi6:

Will keep you in mind. How many miles does the engine have now? Has it been rebuilt?

I has over 200k. I don't know what work has been done to it prior to my ownership. I did a headgasket about 5 years ago and lots of minor things here and there. It runs very well, and I will do a compression check if you're interested. It does need valve stem seals if you care about oil consumption - puffs out a little oil smoke on start up about 1 time in 10. I would trust the engine to drive me anywhere (it's the venerable 22RE, if you're familiar with Toyota engines).

In reply to JohnyHachi6:

Definitely familiar. I had a 22R in an '85 pickup years ago, did the timing chain guides on it after they broke and scored the inside of the cover pretty well. But it was a great truck and never died on me.

Why do you say the Celica is iffy at high speeds? Just the tires?

In reply to british_wayland:

Yeah, some vibration from the old tires, and some of the front-end bushings are pretty shot, so there's some slop in the steering. I would replace the bushings, tires, and get an alignment if I were driving it on the highway, but my commute is only a 10 minute drive and all surface streets.

Gotcha. I'll probably be looking to buy around 10/30, so I'll keep you posted. Thank you for the offer and info! You're definitely a front runner at the moment.
