I'm looking for a '90-94 Mazda Protege LX. I'd like a mostly stock, clean, 5 speed near North Carolina. Preferably not that teal/green colour that they all seem to be, haha, but I'll take a look at any of them.

I've been stalking clubprotege and feoa classifieds for the past few weeks and I wanted to post a want ad here.

I'll consider the BG Escort GT and Tracer LTS variants but really would prefer the Protege.

Help me out GRM!

None? Any ideas where else to look other than craigslist and the other classifieds I mentioned?

I'd say give autotrader a try. The LX/GT/LTS are getting a little tougher to find but they are out there. Try looking out for an Escort LX-E also. They were only made in 92-93 and is basically a 4 door GT. You might also want to open up your options to include a Zx2. They are a more updated version of the BG chassis and all of the goodies bolt right on also. They can be found in better shape too and in your price range most likely.

Also you might pay attention to ANY Protege or Escort/Tracer ad. I saw one a couple of weeks ago for a Protege and noticed it was an LX. A LOT of sellers don't know what they have.

Yeah, I've been looking at any and every listing. It just one of those things where they're everywhere when you don't have the money/space for one and then as soon as you do, they all disappear.

I think that's the craigslist law.

I've got a 96 lx I could be convinced to part with at a decent price.

A '96 what LX? Protege? I'd only be interested in BG Proteges, so nothing after '94 on the Mazda side. Thanks though!

LOL didn't think so. I bought it on the assumption that the 95+ lx's were optioned on the same lines as the BG's, DOH!

After 95, The lx's still had a 1.8 but it wasn't the Miata power plant. The base motor went down to a 1.5. Then a few years down the road, they went to a 2 liter tractor motor (so i've heard)..

I'm seriously considering a miata 1.6 or 1.8 swap for my protege....still It's kinda hard to argue with 35mpg, heel - toeing and downshifting for every stop. I checked the brake pads when I first started driving it 9months ago, "they'll need to be replaced soon" checked them a week or so ago, they're getting there, not quite on the wear indicator's yet. prob do them right after new years to be on the safe side.

From what I've read the Protege ES, although hard to find, had the Miata engine.

How does the BH chassis compare to the fabled (more so) BG?

dunno bout the BG chassis, never driven one, bone stock this one handles well, I've gotten it to lift the inside rear wheel on occasion. with the addition of wider rubber I can get the suspension bottomed out on on-ramps ( say that 5 times fast), or at least the tires scrubbing the inside of the rear wheel wells, even though I've rolled the quarters.. dunno I'm not to disapointed with my 400$ purchase.

Cool, thanks. I've asked the same question in my original thread:

It's about 45 minutes from me. I know it's a little far from you but if you were seriously interested I might be able to go take a look at it.
