looking for a cheap 1 ton dump truck or dump trailer near cleveland ohio.
prefer chevy, but could really care less. i need turn key and go condition even if fugly. or a dump trailer that is similar in size to what a 1 ton dump can carry.
OR a complete ready to bolt on and go dump bed that will fit my 90 chevy 1 ton dually
Would something like an old grain truck with a dump bed work, if the price was right?

I asked my friend about his grain truck. It does have a dump bed. It's a 1971 International Load Star 1600 with 58000 original miles. He'll take $800 cash for it.
He said it runs & drives fine. The front tires are pretty much shot, but he has a pair of good tires that he'll include. The 2-speed(overdrive? Rear-end?? Whatever these old trucks have) has a broken wire from the switch, but its in "high" so it will go down the highway at 55mph just fine.
The truck is in east-central IL(60963), and he has a clear title in his name. I can send/post some pics if you're interested.

right now it's cost prohibitive to drive an 8-10mpg truck back from much farther than 120-150 miles so i'd like to stick to this general area if possible. cleveland, columbus, youngstown, toledo, detroit, erie, pissburgh only if necessary.
by cheap i mean the $800 grain truck would be perfect but it's too far away as i could buy a $1200 truck locally and end up with the same investment after transporting it here.

Yes I can't imagine the fuel bill trying to drive a behemoth like that ~400 miles.
A 14 thousand pound dump trailer will pack about 9 thousand pounds, or the same as a large single axle dump truck of roughly 30000 pounds GVW. You can pull it behind a decent 3/4 ton pickup. Even going down to something in the 7 to 10 thousand pound range would have much more capacity than a 1 ton dump truck, which can legally pack maybe a small sack of flour and a couple of mouse turds. And no repairs or fuel or liscencing........
Heres one near you.

yeah we used to have a friend with a dump trailer that i used regularly behind my 1/2 ton v6 pickup - not recommended but i had that 10' bed full of all kinds of stuff and my truck did ok.
if i get a trailer i can pull it with my dually. if i get a truck i need to pay commercial registration and insurance. however, it seems much cheaper buy-in for a truck than a trailer. i can honestly afford about 1300 right now. i have some scrap i can turn in to get a little more cash.
Pat,
If you get an old enough truck, you can get historic plates for it, avoiding the commercial registration fee. That's what I did with my dually.
true but i also don't want to get busted running historical plates on a rusty beater dump truck. i could register it non commercial i guess as it would be for personal use but because i've got a business and several other things registered commercially, i don't want to get in trouble.
so i struck out when a 1996 3500HD crew cab 12' flatbed dump was purchased while i was pretty much on my way.
so i am still looking i think. i think a dump trailer might be the best thing.

You won't get busted. The cops don't care, as long as it's a current registration, so there's nobody to bust you. That information comes from several friends in the law enforcement field. I've been running historic plates on beaters for years without any problem.
I could be wrong, but IIRC, all 1 ton or larger truck have to be registered commercial (if not historical).
Pat, still looking??

blew my wad on the rambler.
decided my flatbed is good enough for now, i have a young guy that makes $9/hr and it would take lots of manual unloading before i could pay for a dump truck.
