WTB: mk4 VW TDI manual trans

I'm looking for a 5-speed for a mk4 ('99-'04) VW TDI.

My usual local CL hunting is turning up dry, and no local yards seem to have one. The differential on my trans is failing ('99 Golf TDI 5-speed).

Anybody know of one sitting around at a reasonable rate and/or a reasonable drive from Michigan?

I could even use a parts trans to combine two and make one good one if somebody has one with a bad gear/synchros, etc.

It's an 02J, there are two diff sizes, not sure the year split. Should have been in the 2L and the 1.8t if you're just looking for internal parts. The TDI will have a higher FD and bigger gear spacing, but otherwise the same.

You know I started thinking about this a bit further... as I'm not completely familiar with the inner workings of these.

Is the 5th gear / final drive / differential intertwined at all? ...or is the differential "self standing" so to speak (does it require a matching final drive?).

I'm a bit green in this area. I actually have an old 02a/j? in my garage that came out of a B4 Passat 4-cylinder. I wonder if that could donate parts....

Typically cable shift used VW trans' go in the ~$250 range. I've sold multiple at or less than that price from gassers, and passed up numerous TDI geared ones in the past couple years in the $200 to $300 range because I had no need (just observed them via forums/CL).

Retail junkyard pricing (via car-part or the like) is $600~$1000. Now I can't find one below $600 via private seller, or any inventory in a pull-your-own yard. I'm generally willing to drive up to ~250 miles each way if I had to, so I've searched up and around Lake Michigan (South Bend / Chicago / Milwaukee / Madison), along with down and out the other side of the state (Detroit / Toledo / Cleveland / Indianapolis, etc.)

Ugh. My car is still running/driving, but it's going to go eventually. The amount I'm willing to pay is relative to the degree of brokedness my car actually is at that point in time...

Sorry, my reading skillz are short today. I thought you were looking for a whole car. Heck, just take one of those cars for a test drive and pull the trans out and claim "it just stopped"??

I haven't taken one apart, but I have helped swap a 5th gear before and that is just in the end of the case and you can do it with the transaxle in the car.

5th is an entire separate assembly and the TDI ones are big$$ in the right crowds due to the low ratio. Lots of gasser folks make super OD transmissions by using a close ratio 1-4 set and a TDI 5th. The TDI guys often nerd out on even lower ones that are ever bigger $.

There are two ring gear diameters for the 02J but I don't know the year split. I know Gary Peloquin knows as he had to make a different diff for it. Might be worth searching his site or giving him a call. (Just looked, seems like 04 change). Going by his site a 98-up diff should work for you, including 02A.

There is a good chance I know someone with a good take out diff if that's really all you need. You'd pay shipping of course! PM me.
