I have the same truck- the thing is a beast, but dear god does it hurt to fill that 42 gallon tank at worse than 10 mpg. $1200 is a damn good price if it's not really rusty.

8mpg towing, 10mpg hauling stuff, 12mpg if you're lucky empty. Sometimes it makes more sense to pay more and get a more efficient truck. I sold mine (well, it wast the pickup version) for the same price because I never used it due to the gas consumption. Dang those things are thirsty.

In reply to dculberson:

On the flip side, it keeps you from driving your truck when you don't need to, which saves money (kind of?)

However if you need to tow a heavy trailer and carry a carload of people at the same time, you can't really beat a big block suburban unless you spend several times more on something diesel.

Gas hog or not, that's a steal. I bet it's gone already.

Yeah, when you realize it costs you $8 just to get to work and back .. and you live 10 miles from work .. that's a bad commuter. I can't imagine driving one of these as much as the one I had - it had 275k miles on it. At today's prices that's close to $100,000 in gas!

This is why I bought the diesel 2WD version of the same truck, but I paid 3x more for it.

I have a 05' 2500 Suburban (6.0 L) 4x4 that gets 15.5 to 16.0 miles per gallon if I'm easy on gas, and around 10 -11 towing. It also has the Quadrasteer which makes it nice to drive around town.

That's exactly what I was looking for but couldn't find one that wasn't really rusty Or needing four grand worth of work. That looks good for the money.

I had an older generation model (1987) also with the 454 but it was a 4X2 and it still only got 9-11 mpg! You didn't have a problem towing anything but it would cost you that's for sure. Also it rode like a "truck" loaded or empty. I sold it in 2002 for $2400.

My current tow vehicle is a 1988 Ford E250 extended window van. Bigger inside, better on gas when not towing anything (5.8L V8), and twice the room inside. And it rides almost car like loaded or empty.
