Only the 1.9L 4cyl was available in 1996. Performance is similar to a Miata of that era.

Yes, I had one. Sold it for $850 I think, and it was in rough shape. Nice ones go for as much as $2k, just for the hard top!

So an overpriced hard top and this car would still be cheaper than the cou-pay version.
I had a six cylinder Z3. Don't mistake these cars for roomier, more powerful Miatas. The cars have nothing in common, aside from the fact that they are both two seat, RWD convertibles.
The Z3 drives like a sedan. I loved the engine, but not the overall experience.
Hardtops are available, but not plentiful. If you find a hardtop, hardware to mount it onto your car is very expensive.
In reply to Woody :
I arranged for moms significant other to buy what must be about the nicest Z3 (last year made, 6 cylinder 5 speed, in the pic i posted) and it's exceedingly "meh". It doesn't handle like my Miata and the engine is fine I suppose but never gets rambunctious or feels lively in any particular way. If it feels this heavy it should have real POWAR and it just doesn't.
