Friends of ours - son drove the car into a puddle that was deep. Now with the plugs out the crank turns just a little in both directions before hitting huge resistance. I don't know too much more but if anyone wants an E39 tub I'll put you in touch.

Guessing bent rods based on the description.
5 speed manual sedan. Miles and pics coming tonight.
This is a family that we were friends with in FL and they moved to OH. My wife is friends on the Book of Faces. Last night she was ranting about their string of misfortunes, so since it was a BMW my wife called. So this is all that I know about the car. Anyone interested I'll be happy to put you in touch with them. Really nice people. Dad is a 'Murican car guy, so he knew to pull the plugs and try to rotate the crank, but he doesn't want to mess with his son's "furrin" car with too many electronics. They are resigned to the fact that it is junk and they aren't going to get much beyond scrap. 18 year old still has one $100 payment left to the friend he bought it from, so it's a life lesson in "don't drive into the deep puddle." Posted here to help them out because it seems right for this group.
Seems like a great donor to manualize a wagon. Sell off parts to zero out cost. If I had no kids I would have bought it already.
